WASHINGTON, PA-The Washington Wild Things put together eight hits, including a solo home run from second baseman Sam Mende, but were unable to defeat the visiting Traverse City Beach Bums on Sunday, June 7, falling by a final score of 8-3. Starter Luke Wilkins suffered the mound loss for the Wild Things in the rubber match of the three-game series, while Michael Shreves took the win.

After a two-run first inning by Traverse City, Washington responded with a run of their own when designated hitter CJ Beatty plated right fielder David Popkins on an RBI single. Popkins reached base earlier in the inning on a hard hit triple.

Traverse City took the lead for good in the top half of the third when right fielder Reggie Lawson smacked a grand slam to left, giving the Beach Bums a 6-1 advantage. TC added to their lead in the top of the fifth when left fielder Brandon Jacobs hit a two-run home run off of Washington reliever Joe Iorio.

On the mound, the Wild Things used five pitchers in relief and allowed just four hits after the two-run bomb by Jacobs.

In the sixth inning, the Beach Bums looked to begin another scoring run until shortstop Jeudy Valdez turned an impressive double play to end the inning. The confidence rolled into the Washington at bat when Beatty, who led off the bottom of the sixth with a double, scored off of a groundout by first baseman Lee Orr to make it an 8-2 ballgame.

The Wild Things inched closer to TC in the bottom of the eighth when Mende launched his solo dinger to push the score to 8-3. Mende's extra-base knock was his second of the season.

A Washington comeback looked to be brewing in the bottom of the ninth when the Wild Things loaded the bases with two outs, but the Traverse City defense stalled any further chances at the plate, taking the game and series victory.
