Richmond RiverDogs News Release
RICHMOND, VA - A controversial goal from Alex Goupil late in the second period ended up being the game winner as the Danbury Trashers handed the Richmond RiverDogs their fifth straight defeat in a 5-2 victory before 3,626 at the Richmond Coliseum. Former RiverDog Francois Belanger was the top star in the game as he notched a goal and assist and Jean Michel Dupuis added a pair of assists and a goal in the win. With less than three minutes to go in the second period, another former RiverDog, David Hymovitz carried the puck down the left wing side and fed a pass to Goupil who took a shot at Richmond's goaltender Tyler Masters. Masters dove to his left and made the save along the goal line as Richmond turned the puck back towards the Danbury end. Trasher players had their sticks high in the air signaling a goal but play continued. When Referee Tyler Johnson blew the play dead approximately a minute later, Danbury Coach Paul Gillis sent his team captain over to the referee's crease to confer with the referee as to whether or not a goal was scored. After consultation with his linesmen, Johnson went to the goal judge to get his eyewitness view of the play. When the discussion ended, Referee Johnson ruled that the puck crossed the goal line and the goal counted. Whether the puck did or did not cross the line, the goal took all the wind out of the RiverDogs sails. Danbury took the momentum into the third period and scored a pair to ice the victory.
Richmond took a 1-0 lead on a Jason Cassell goal 4:39 in the first period. Danbury tied it at one all on a goal from Jean Michel Dupuis at 2:13, Richmond went out in front 2-1 on a slap shot from the slot from "Bruise Brother" Mike Wolf at 4:20. Danbury tied it four minutes later on a goal from Francois Belanger and then the controversial goal late in the period by Goupil.
The RiverDogs take to the road for three games beginning Wednesday night as the team plays against the Elmira Jackals, followed by a weekend set against the Roanoke Valley Vipers on Friday and Saturday. The RiverDogs return home on Wednesday, November 9 as they play host to the Adirondack Frostbite.
