Warthogs fall to Keys in extra innings

Winston-Salem, NC â The Winston-Salem Warthogs (6-13) dropped the final game of a four-game series with the Frederick Keys in front of 1,824 at Ernie Shore Field. The Keys came from behind to beat the âhogs by a score of 8-7 in 10 innings. Winston-Salem lost for the first time in four ballgames, and finished its seven-game homestand with a record of 4-3. RHP Jason Stumm took the loss in relief, giving up one run on three hits in one and a third innings pitched. Stumm falls to 1-2. Ryan Keefer earned the win after pitching the two shutout innings of relief for the Keys. Keefer improves to 1-0.
The Warthogs took a 2-0 lead in the first inning off Frederick starter Paul Henry on an Andy Gonzalez two-run homerun. The homer was Gonzalez's second in two games. Henry pitched an inning and two-thirds, giving up three earned runs on five hits.
Frederick tied the ballgame in the top of the second inning when Tripper Johnson hit his fifth homerun of the season, also a two-run shot off Warthogs' starter Nik Lubisich. Lubisich pitched five innings, giving up four earned runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out three.
With the game tied at four in the bottom of the eighth inning, Brian Becker and Casey Rogowski singled off Keys' reliever Chris Piersoll. Then Brian Anderson doubled in pinch-runner Normand Martel from second off Keys' reliever Jeff Montani to make it 5-4 âhogs. Ricardo Nanita was then intentionally walked to load the bases for Wally Rosa. Rosa followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 6-4. After Montani retired the next two hitters, he walked Andy Gonzalez with the bases loaded to give Winston-Salem a three-run advantage.
In the top of the ninth inning, Warthogs' reliever Dwayne Pollok walked Gera Alvarez to lead off. Then with one out, Doug Gredvig doubled, moving Alvarez to third. Tripper Johnson hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Alvarez and make it 7-5. Octavio Martinez followed with an RBI single, scoring Gredvig. Cory Keylor then singled, moving Gredvig to second, and Ryan Hubele tied the ballgame with an RBI single off Warthogs' reliever Jason Stumm.
Then in the top of the tenth inning, with one out, Stumm walked Alvarez. The next batter, Cory Harris lined out to Tommy Nicholson, but an errant throw to first allowed Alvarez to advance to third. He then scored on the two-out RBI single by Gredvig, for an 8-7 Keys' advantage. The âhogs could not score in the bottom of the tenth inning.
Tripper Johnson and Chris Carter each homered for the Keys. Johnson racked up three RBI. Doug Gredvig paced the Keys with four hits, including two doubles, and two runs scored. Andy Gonzalez hit a homerun for the Warthogs. Pedro Lopez had three hits in six at-bats. Gonzalez and Wally Rosa each had two RBI.
The Warthogs hit the road for a three-game set with Wilmington, then four at Frederick. The âhogs begin their series with Wilmington on Friday. First pitch is set for 7:05 pm. RHP Rob Purvis will toss for Winston-Salem. RHP Trae McGill will take to the hill for Wilmington. All the play by play will be heard on the internet at www.warthogs.com.
