Warthogs Blank Salem 3-0 in Series Finale

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Warthogs starting pitcher John Ely wiggled out of numerous jams in guiding Winston-Salem to a 3-0 victory over Salem in the series finale on Thursday night at Ernie Shore Field. The Avalanche left 11 men on base and Ely (4-11) danced out of numerous Salem scoring opportunities while working five shutout innings. The right-hander allowed eight hits, but did not walk a batter and struck out six to garner his first win since June 12.
Winston-Salem loaded the bases with nobody out against Douglas Arguello in the first inning, but only managed a run. With the bags packed, John Shelby III grounded into a double play, which brought a run across to give the Warthogs a 1-0 lead. Arguello forced a ground out from Brett Bonvechio with a runner at third to end the inning and limit the damage.
The Warthogs added a run in the third inning when Paulo Orlando led off the frame with an infield single. After stealing second base, Orlando moved to third on a ground out. C.J. Retherford lined an RBI single up the middle to give Winston-Salem a 2-0 lead. An RBI sac fly by Bonvechio in the sixth inning brought Retherford home with the Warthogs third and final run.
Four relievers worked the final four innings for Winston-Salem and only allowed one hit while striking out four. Henry Mabee retired the side in order in the ninth to collect his second consecutive save. Arguello (7-4) suffered his first loss in five starts against the Warthogs this season even though he induced five double plays. The southpaw allowed three runs on seven hits in seven innings of work.
The Warthogs will travel to Myrtle Beach to open a three-game series against the Pelicans. The opener is Friday night at BB&T Coastal Field with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
