Salem Red Sox News Release

Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, couldn't crack the Winston-Salem pitching staff Thursday night in a 3-0 series finale victory for the Warthogs. Winston-Salem (18-14) starter John Ely tossed five scoreless innings to silence the Avalanche (10-21).

Winston-Salem challenged Douglas Arguello in the first inning as Paulo Orlando walked and Dale Mollenhauer reached on an error. Next, C.J. Retherford walked to load the bases for John Shelby III. The left fielder bounced into a double play which scored Orlando to give the Warthogs the lead.

In the third, Orlando singled on the infield and stole second to lead off. He reached third on a ground ball to second and came home immediately after on a C.J. Retherford RBI single.

The final run came across as runners hit second and third with nobody out in the sixth. Immediately after, Brett Bonvechio lofted a ball to right field; the sacrifice fly scored Retherford for the 3-0.

Ely smothered the Avs with a scoreless five innings that included eight hits and six strikeouts. The bullpen went four scoreless innings to salt the game away for Ely.

Salem begins a 10-game homestand Friday at 7:07 with the Lynchburg Hillcats as righty Corey Bass faces lefty Tony Watson.
