Warthogs and Kinston Suspended Due to Power Outage

KINSTON, NC - Opening Day for the Winston-Salem Warthogs and Kinston Indians was full of promise, but ended in darkness when the game was suspended in the bottom of the third inning at Grainger Stadium due to a citywide power outage. The game will be resumed at 6 p.m. on Saturday as part of a doubleheader. The suspended game will continue as an originally scheduled nine-inning game with the second game scheduled for seven innings.
Kinston struck first with a two-out rally in the bottom of the second inning as three consecutive doubles plated three runs. Nick Weglarz, who reached on a single, scored on an RBI double by Carlos Rivera to break the scoreless tie. Cirilo Cumberbatch and Alex Castillo followed with back-to-back RBI doubles to give Kinston a 3-0 advantage.
The Indians were on the verge of breaking the game open in the bottom of the third inning having loaded the bases with no outs, when the power outage brought darkness to the stadium and the action to a halt. The game will resume with Weglarz at the plate with a 2-0 count and the bases loaded with no outs.
The stoppage could not have come at a better time for Warthogs starting pitcher Aaron Poreda, who was making his Carolina League debut. Poreda, the White Sox top prospect and 2007 first round pick (25th overall), had allowed three earned runs on seven hits when the game was called. All three runners are his responsibility when the game resumes.
Following the completion of the suspended game, the Warthogs will send RHP Matt Ely (0-0, 0.00) to the mound for the seven-inning nightcap. Kinston will counter with RHP Hector Rondin (0-0, 0.00). First pitch is scheduled for 30 minutes after the completion of game one.
