Santa Cruz Warriors News Release
EL SEGUNDO, CA - The Santa Cruz Warriors (9-4) beat the South Bay Lakers (7-6), 130-112, to win the series and secure the top seed in the Western Conference on Thursday night at UCLA Health Training Center in El Segundo, CA.
Guard Donovan Williams lead the Warriors with 29 points and six rebounds, followed closely behind by guard Kendric Davis with 28 points and five assists. Forward Gui Santos, on assignment from Golden State, contributed 19 points, six rebounds, and four assists, and two-way guard Lester Quinones added 16 points, six rebounds, and six assists in the win.
The Lakers were led by guards Bryce Hamilton and Damion Baugh, who each scored 23 points. Guard Quinndary Weatherspoon contributed 22 points, and forward Louis King added 16 points in the loss. Guard Shaquille Harrison led South Bay in rebounding and notched a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds.
The contest opened with both teams battling for the upper hand before the Lakers capitalized on costly Santa Cruz turnovers to pull ahead and end the frame with a score of 36-28. After falling behind by as many as 16 points to start the period, the Warriors went on a 32-4 run to regain the lead. Williams shot 4-for-5 from the three-point line and scored 15 points in the second quarter, allowing the Sea Dubs to outscore the home side 44-26 and enter the break with a 72-62 advantage.
South Bay started the second half strong and came thundering into the third period on a 7-0 run, but the Warriors managed to respond with an efficient offensive showing of their own to close out the frame with a 101-87 lead. The final quarter saw the Warriors' Davis score 15 of the team's first 20 points, and the depleted Lakers roster proved to be no match for Santa Cruz's momentum as the Sea Dubs cruised to a 130-112 victory.
The Warriors will return home to face the Stockton Kings on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Kaiser Permanente Arena. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a Holiday Ornament.
