SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The NBA D-League Champion Santa Cruz Warriors (4-3) were defeated by the Austin Spurs (5-1) 98-87 on Saturday night at Kaiser Permanente Arena.
Santa Cruz's Elliot Williams recorded a double-double with 26 points on an 11-of-19 shooting effort to go with 11 assists. Verdell Jones III notched 18 points, going 5-of-6 from beyond the arc, all in the fourth quarter. Juwan Staten added 10 points for the Warriors. Cameron Bairstow paced the Spurs with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Cady Lalanne had 17 points 9 rebounds. Deshaun Thomas recorded 12 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists.
The first quarter was a tightly contested battle that saw 6 lead changes and 5 ties. Austin would go on a 15-6 run at the start of the second quarter and would own a 9-point advantage heading into the break. The Spurs would never relinquish their hold on the Warriors, despite a fourth quarter rally that would bring Santa Cruz within 9 points of Austin with a minute left to play in the game. The attempt at a final frame comeback would fall short of eclipsing Austin's lead, with Santa Cruz dropping the back end of the double-header, 98-87. The Warriors outscored the Spurs in the paint (44-40) and on fast break opportunities (20-12). Austin outscored Santa Cruz on second chance points (19-8) and also outrebounded Santa Cruz (51-36).
The Santa Cruz Warriors will host a weekend doubleheader against the visiting Texas Legends beginning Friday December 4th at 7:00 p.m. PST at Kaiser Permanente Arena. Fans can catch the game on the NBA D-League's YouTube channel, via www.santacruzbasketball.com or on KOTR Channel 11, or Channel 187 in Santa Cruz on Comcast.
