Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
The Moose Jaw Warriors have won three of their last four games.
In those three victories, the team has outscored the opposition by a combined score of 24-5 after Saturday's 7-0 win over Saskatoon at Mosaic Place.
"It's obviously a good day to come to the rink... and hopefully we can keep the momentum and goal scoring going into Winnipeg," Warriors forward Jagger Firkus said on Monday before departing to Winnipeg.
The only team to beat the Warriors in the past two weeks is the East Division-leading ICE, who topped Moose Jaw 4-0 on Mar. 16 in Winnipeg.
Moose Jaw makes a return trip to the Manitoba capital on Tuesday for the first of two meetings against the ICE this week.
Firkus said the Warriors will need to build off their successes over the past few weeks.
"They're a very, very good team, but we've beat them this year already once, we can do it again for sure," he said. "We know we have to play our 'A' game to win."
Firkus has been on fire as of late with three goals and six points in his past two games. He also posted a goal and two points at last week's CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game where he was named Player of the Game for Team White.
The 17-year-old forward said his confidence is high right now.
"I had a good week in Kitchener, so that's probably where it comes from and I'm trying to bring that to the Warriors and towards our playoff push," he said.
Firkus, who leads the Warriors with 35 goals and 78 points this season, said the game is slowing down for him right now.
"I can make a play quicker and I can read a play quicker and that's obviously great," he said. "That's coming with playing in the league longer and getting to go to those sweet events like Kitchener, it's just slowly getting better and better for me."
Going into Winnipeg, Firkus said the Warriors will need to limit their turnovers to counter the ICE's transition ability.
"Just make sure we're getting pucks deep at the blue line and make sure the puck stays low and slow," he said. "You can't be trying to make too pretty plays in the o-zone because if you do it, it could be an odd man rush.
"I noticed last game they have lots of back pressure coming at you and you've got to think of a play quick and get it off your stick quick."
The Warriors and ICE face-off at 6 p.m. Saskatchewan time at the Wayne Fleming Arena in Winnipeg.
