Warriors Dropped by Charge

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Santa Cruz Warriors fell to the Canton Charge 104-85 Saturday night.

The Warriors were paced by Cameron Jones, who scored 18 points and had four assists. Dewayne Dedmon recorded his eleventh double-double in 12 games with 11 points and 11 boards, while Dominic McGuire scored 16 points and grabbed six boards in his first game as a Santa Cruz Warrior. Kiwi Gardner dished out a game-high nine assists.

Canton was led by Kevin Jones, who scored a game-high 19 points. Jorge Gutierrez scored 18 points and had seven assists, while Shane Edwards scored seven points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.

The game was tied three times in the first few minutes, but Canton took the 6-8 lead on a Jorge Gutierrez layup with 9:17 left in the first and never looked back. Canton scored 35 points on 76.5% shooting in the first quarter, and followed it up with 52.2% shooting in the second. The Charge were ahead by as much as 23 points in the third quarter, but Santa Cruz cut Canton's lead to nine with 6:22 left in the fourth quarter. The Charge closed out the game on a 16-6 run to win by 19.

Santa Cruz shot 42.9% from the field, while Canton shot 49.3% from the floor and 50.0% from three. The Charge outrebounded the Warriors (45-39), committed fewer turnovers (13-15), and had more second chance points (14-4). Santa Cruz held the edge on assists (23-22) and scored more points in the paint (50-32).

The Santa Cruz Warriors head to Reno for two games at the NBA D-League Showcase. The Warriors take on the Fort Wayne Mad Ants at 12:45 p.m. on Monday, January 6 and the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Thursday, January 9 at 12:45 p.m. Fans can listen to the broadcasts on the Santa Cruz Warriors flagship station, KION 1460AM/101.1FM, or watch both games on NBA TV.
