SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (14-11), the NBA G League affiliate of the Houston Rockets, were defeated 116-111 by the Santa Cruz Warriors (16-11) on Tuesday night at Kaiser Permanente Arena.
Jarrett Culver got the Vipers going by scoring 15 out of the 21 points in the first six minutes of the opening quarter as Santa Cruz trailed by six. Ray Spalding then took charge and put up 13 points for the Vipers which helped carry the team 42-29 past the Warriors.
In the second quarter the Warriors cut its 13-point deficit to six, but the team was still at a 63-57 disadvantage over the Vipers at the half.
Mid third quarter Santa Cruz took its first lead of the game (84-74) after going on a 13-0 run. The home team kept the momentum going and closed off the quarter with an 89-78 advantage. As the game continued the Warriors continued with the upper hand. The Vipers attempted to make a comeback in the last few minutes of the game but despite the efforts of RGV, Santa Cruz walked out victorious 116-111.
Culver led all scorers with 25 points followed by Jalen Lecque with 17 points and Spalding with 12 points.
Donovan Williams paved the way for Santa Cruz with 20 points. Javonte Green contributed 16 points. Golden State Warriors Two-Way Usman Garuba posted the only double-double of the game with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
