Columbus Wardogs News Release

Columbus, GA - The Columbus Wardogs have put a new slant on an old saying: If you can't beat ‘em, trade for ‘em.

The Wardogs have completed a trade with in-state rival Macon by obtaining quarterback Cecil Lester from the Knights. Two weeks ago, Lester threw for 239 yards and four touchdowns, while running for another three scores, to lead the Knights past Columbus 55-40 in Macon.

In five games with Macon, Lester threw for 764 yards and ten touchdowns. He was also the team's leading rusher with 100 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Yet the 6-foot-1, 190-pound rookie from Fort Valley State also struggled a bit in his first year, completing only 50% of his passes and throwing five interceptions. His win over Columbus was Macon's only win in his three starts. Lester became expendable this week when Macon signed veteran af2 quarterback Will Burch.

"It's a touchy situation for me because we may have to play against him (when Macon visits Columbus on June 19)," said Macon head coach Mike Hold. "He might make me look goofy."

"This deal gives us a quality quarterback with experience to back-up starter Kyle Rowley," said Columbus head coach John Fourcade.

Although Rowley has been one of the hottest quarterbacks in the league lately, passing for 861 yards and 17 touchdowns in the last three games, the Wardogs have been without a back-up since Chris Windsor was released earlier this month. Lester will be in uniform this weekend when the Wardogs host Bossier City-Shreveport.

In exchange for Lester, the Wardogs traded to Macon the rights for quarterback Tim Olmstead. The former Vanderbilt quarterback practiced with Columbus for a few days last month before leaving the team for personal reasons.
