San Diego Riptide News Release

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Riptide added a second Ivy Leaguer to their roster this week after being assigned OL/DL Chris Nugent by the league office. The team also placed wide receiver Ashley Burrows on the long-term injured reserve after injuring his leg in Week 8's game against Quad City.

After pulling off an upset over the Midwest Division-leading Quad City Steamwheelers that featured a strong performance by the offensive line that allowed Quarterback Kane Claunch to throw eight passing touchdowns and one rushing score, the Riptide continued to strengthen both their offensive and defensive line with the addition of Nugent.

Nugent, a 6-foot-2-inch, 255-pound lineman, reunites with fellow Columbia grad, Patrick Girardi on the Riptide line. The Ivy Leaguers played alongside each other on the defensive line for the Columbia Lions from 1999-2001. Nugent was a starting defensive end for Columbia from 1997-2001, missing the 2000 season with an injury. He recorded 49 tackles in his college career, including 1.5 sacks his senior season.

Nugent was born to play on the defensive side of the ball, growing up around football. His father, Merv, was a two-time All-Mid American Conference defensive end while at Miami (OH) in the late 60's and his uncle, Mike, was an ALL-MAC defensive back at Ohio University in the early 70's.

Burrows, the Riptide's first-year wide receiver/line backer out of Arizona was placed on the long term injured reserved list after averaging 10.2 receiving yards per game. He has six-and-a-half tackles and one sack in the six games this season. He left the Quad City game in the first quarter with a leg injury. There is no timetable set for his return.

Quarterback Tony Corbin was also moved from short-term injured reserve to the long-term injured reserve list with a sore left shoulder. Kevin Feterik will continue to serve as the backup to Claunch at quarterback.

The Riptide take on the Hawaiian Islanders Friday in Honolulu at 9:30 p.m. PDT. They then continue a three-game road trip in Central Valley next Saturday before enjoying their second bye week of the season. The ‘Tide return home to San Diego on June 26 to take on the Bakersfield Blitz with free Riptide t-shirts going to the first 3,000 fans. Tickets for that game are still available by stopping by the Sports Arena box office or logging onto Ticketmaster.com.

All Riptide games can be heard live on www.WorldTalkRadio.com with insight and analysis for road games provided by Riptide public relations director David Hale and "the Voice of the Riptide" Mark Rogandino.
