WINNIPEG, MB - The 2006 Grey Cup Organizing Committee is pleased to announce the appointment of Kevin Walters as Managing Director of the 2006 Grey Cup Festival.

Walters, 45, has plenty of experience organizing large-scale events. He is the full-time manager of the sound recording program with Manitoba Film and Sound. As such, he is responsible for promoting Manitoba recording artists at home and around the world.

The University of Winnipeg graduate also served as the chairperson of the host committee for the 2005 Juno Awards here in Winnipeg. The event, which celebrates the accomplishments of Canada's music industry, was widely hailed as one of the most successful in Juno history.

"Kevin has consistently shown that he knows how to lead and how to do it with style," said David Asper, co-chair of the 2006 Grey Cup organizing committee. "His role with the Juno Awards puts proof to that point and we are very pleased to have him on board for the Grey Cup. Get ready for a very big party."

Grey Cup co-chair Gene Dunn added: "While the announcement is being made today, we have been working with Kevin for a couple of months and it is clear that he is ready to lead Winnipeg's next great event. We are fortunate to have him on our team."

Walters acknowledged that the experience he gained organizing the Juno Awards should serve him well in his role as Managing Director of the Grey Cup Festival.

"For the last two years we were trying to make the Juno Awards the Grey Cup of the music industry," said Walters, who will continue to work with Manitoba Film and Sound in addition to his football responsibilities. "The next challenge will be actually being involved in the Grey Cup.

"There are a lot of linkages between the two events. They both attract large numbers of people and celebrate excellence."

As Managing Director, Walters will be responsible for overseeing all facets of the 2006 Grey Cup celebrations, from working with Grey Cup co-chairs David Asper and Gene Dunn to planning Grey Cup Festival events.

While the 2006 Grey Cup will bring together Canadians from one end of the country to another, Walters promised it will have a distinctly Manitoba flavour.

Walters added he is confident that Winnipeg's success in staging national and international level events will ensure the success of next year's Grey Cup.

"The goal is to engage the city and have the city excited about the Grey Cup being here and bring in 50,000 fans and put on a great party for the people of Winnipeg and Manitoba that will be remembered," he said.

The 2006 Grey Cup game will be played Nov. 19, 2006 at Canad Inns Stadium.
