Walrond makes Major League debut

On Sunday, June 8th, the Kansas City Royals recalled former New Jersey Cardinals pitcher, Les Walrond (NJC-98) from the Omaha Royals (Pacific Coast League). Following call-up, Walrond appeared in that days contest against the Colorado Rockies. In two innings of work, Walrond allowed one run on two hits. He struck out three and walked one.

Walrond was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinalsin the 13th round of the June 1998 free-agent draft from Kansas University. In 13 games with the New Jersey Cardinals, Walrond had a 2-4 record to accompany his 4.01 ERA. Les Walrond also punched out fifty-two opponents.

Walrond becomes the 19th former New Jersey Cardinals player to be promoted to the Major Leagues. Others include former manager Jose Oquendo (NJC-98) and players Matt Morris (NJC-95), Brady Raggio (NJC-94), Curtis King (NJC-94), Keith Glauber (NJC-94), Carl Dale (NJC-94), Miguel Mejia (NJC-97), Adam Kennedy (NJC-97), Chad Hutchinson (NJC-98), Justin Brunette (NJC-97), Gene Stechshulte (NJC-96/97), Chris Richard (NJC-95), Britt Reames (NJC-95), Jason Karnuth (NJC-97), Josh Pearce (NJC-99), Jose Leon (NJC-96), Covelli Crisp (NJC-00), and Esix Snead (NJC-98).
