Walleye Notes
Four Point Week Pushes Toledo to the Top of ECHL: The Walleye came roaring back Tuesday night with a pair of goals in the last two minutes to even the game in Cincinnati before falling 3-2 in overtime. Toledo picked up its ninth shootout win of the year on Wednesday 3-2 in Indy. Goaltender Jeff Lerg stopped all three Fuel shooters he faced. Friday night, Kyle Bonis scored three and the Walleye raced to a 5-0 lead in Kalamazoo before winning 6-3. Three first period goals were too much for Elmira on Saturday night as Toledo collected a 4-2 win.
What a Race: The 103 points for the Walleye is two better than Florida in the race for the Brabham Cup given to the team with the most points. Only two teams in Toledo ECHL history have finished the year with the most points: 2002-03 with 104 points and 1991-92 with 95.
New ECHL Record: Friday's win set a brand new ECHL record for the greatest point turnaround from one season to the next. Toledo finished the 2013-14 season with just 49 points. This year's team has already reached 103 points (+54). The previous best was set by Knoxville (+50) in 1992-1994 and matched by Greenville 2003-2005.
Bonis is Alone: With his second hat trick of the season on Friday night, Kyle Bonis has set a new single season goals record for the Toledo Walleye with 36 goals (added two more on Saturday). That is four goals better than the previous record held by Evan Rankin (2009-10) and Mike Hedden (2010-11).
Wins Record About to Fall: The win over Elmira on Saturday gave the Walleye 48 wins which equals the 1995-96 Storm team for the most in Toledo ECHL history. That team finished the year 48-14-8. Toledo is just one point from reaching the most points ever hit by a Toledo ECHL team at 104, last reached in 2002-03 season.
Hello 200: The win on Wednesday at Indy was the 200th in Walleye history. Since starting in 2009, the Walleye have a record of 202-185-42.
Lerg Reaches 30: The Wednesday win gave goaltender Jeff Lerg his 30th win of the season. He becomes the first Walleye goaltender to ever reach that level and the Saturday victory tied him with Doug Teskey (31 in 2002-03) for the third most in a single season in Toledo ECHL history. The Toledo ECHL record of 35 was set by Nick Vitucci in the 1994-95 season.
The Final Regular Season Weekend: Toledo has just three games remaining in the regular season with Cincinnati coming to Toledo on Friday night. The Walleye have a 3-2-1 record against the I-75 rivals. The final two games of the year are against the KWings starting Saturday in Kalamazoo and finishing Sunday in Toledo. Toledo has a 7-4-0 record against Kalamazoo this year.
Walleye Player of the Week:
Kyle Bonis (5 goals - 2 assists = 7 points)
Walleye Goaltender of the Week:
Jeff Lerg (2-0-1, 2.28 GAA, .916 save %)
