Walla Walla Blanked in 2-0 Series

CORVALLIS, OR -- After Walla Walla scored 33 runs over three games earlier in the week against Victoria, the Corvallis Knights (18-13) humbled the Sweets (19-12) with a 2-0 shut out in the series opener Thursday night at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The shut out is the first for Walla Walla as second baseman John Skrbec notched two of the team's three hits on the night.

Starting pitcher Jonathan Harris took his fourth loss of the season to move to 1-4 as the right-hander gave up two runs on three hits over 6.1 innings in his seventh appearance. He sat down the Knights' offense in order in the bottom of the first before an error at shortstop began the home half of the second. He escaped the inning by striking out one and relying on solid defense the rest of the evening. Shortstop Nick Vilter and third baseman Jarod Gonzales each made a few spectacular plays in the field, but were a combined 1-for-6 at the plate, as Gonzales singled in the fifth inning, and Vilter struck out three times as part of an 0-for-4 game.

Knights starter Chris Bishop earned his first win of the season, throwing six full innings, allowing three hits but zero earned runs as he struck out six Sweets hitters en route to Corvallis's fourth win in a row.

Corvallis catcher Dane Lund's single to left field to begin the fourth inning was the Knights' first hit. A walk to first baseman Gabe Clark two batters later moved Lund to second and he reached third base on a balk. Clark stole second base, and as Skrbec cut the throw off, he had no play as Lund hustled in to score, putting the home team ahead 1-0.

Harris recorded two quick outs in the fifth inning but center fielder Blake Drake would not go quietly, doubling down the left field line to keep the inning alive. He scored on shortstop Peter Van Gansen's RBI base hit to left field to up the Knights' lead to 2-0. The Corvallis bullpen did the rest of the work, not allowing a hit for the final three innings.

Walla Walla retains its first place position in the WCL North division. With the win, Corvallis still was held two games behind the Bend Elks (21-12), who won their ballgame Thursday.

Game two of the series between Corvallis and Walla Walla continues Thursday with a 6:40 p.m. first pitch. Right-hander Cody Poteet gets the start.
