Vermont Mountaineers News Release
12 walks and five errors don't often lead to wins in baseball, and that's exactly what happened to the Mountaineers Friday night in Keene, as they dropped the game to the Swamp Bats, 12-4.
Keene jumped out to an early lead, scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the first off starter Zach Lutner (Sicklerville, NJ/ Villanova). Following a single and two walks, Brandon Smith (Georgetown, IN/ Dayton) singled in a run, giving the Swamp Bats their second run.
Vermont was able to cut the deficit in half in the third, as Samuel Duran (Melbourne, FL/ Nova Southeastern) singled down the left field line, scoring Chase Achuff (St. Petersburg, FL/ Eckerd).
Keene grabbed two more in the top of the fourth and then hung a six spot on the Mountaineers in the sixth inning to take a commanding 12-2 lead. After loading the bases, a passed ball allowed Joe Breaux (Tomball, TX/ Alabama Tuscaloosa) to score. Buddy Dewaine Jr. then grounded into a fielder's choice as Alex Carballo (Pembroke Pines, FL/ Kennesaw State) scored on the play. Alex Griffith (Bristol, VA/ Francis Marion) doubled to left, scoring Smith. Jake Whitcomb (Harrisburg, NC/ UNC Charlotte) then drew a bases loaded walk to force in another run. Breaux came up for the second time in the inning, and grounded into an infield single, scoring Keene's sixth run of the inning.
One lone bright spot for the Mountaineers was catcher Straton Podaras (Glen Head, NY/ Radford). Podaras came in during the second inning, threw three runners out in a span of two innings, and added a long solo home run to right center, his first of the year.
Lutner took the loss for the Mountaineers, going two and a third innings, giving up two runs on four hits and six walks, while striking out two. The win for the Swamp Bats goes to Andrew Houde (Newport, NH/ Keene State). Houde went two and a third innings in relief, surrendering only one run on one hit, while striking out one.
The Mountaineers (1-3) next play Monday, as they travel to North Adams to take on the Steeple Cats, first pitch scheduled for 6:30. As of Friday, both North Adams and Vermont sit in the bottom of the Northern Division at 1-3. The game can be heard on CBS Sports 1240-AM WSKI or online via The NECBL Broadcast Network.
