Upper Valley Nighthawks News Release
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, VT. - Anthony Quirion's two-run homerun in the sixth inning provided the insurance runs Upper Valley needed to top the Winnipesaukee Muskrats in their home-opener on Saturday night at Maxfield Sports Complex.
The Nighthawks were first on the scoreboard Saturday evening, as Drew Tipton scored on a wild pitch in the first inning to give Upper Valley an early 1-0 lead.
Winnipesaukee tied the game in the top of the third inning when Ryan Richard hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, which scored Sam Cochrane from third base.
Nighthawks first-baseman Chris Berry (University of North Florida) led off the sixth inning with a walk, before Anthony Quirion (Lamar University) homered to put Upper Valley back on top.
Muskrat pitching struggles in the sixth put two men aboard via back-to-back walks before Eric Feliz (University of Notre Dame) singled to drive in Hunter Gibson (Wichita State University) and give the Nighthawks a 4-1 lead.
Nighthawks starter Reid VanScoter (W) (Binghamton University) tossed six innings, gave up just two hits, one run, walked one, and struck out seven. Cole Stetzar (SV) (St. Joseph's University) was light's out from the bullpen, pitching three innings of relief, giving up two hits, no walks, and fanning a pair of Muskrats. The loss was charged to Winnipesaukee reliever Erry Balayc.
The Nighthawks are back in action tomorrow at Maxfield Sports Complex, as they host the Mystic Schooners at 5:00 PM. Fans can look forward to Princess & Pirate Night. Kids and adults are encouraged to channel their inner Cinderella or Blackbeard and join us for a night of fun. There will be Disney princesses on hand for pictures and a treasure hunt.
