Berkshire Black Bears News Release
It took a full nine innings tonight at Wahconah, but after the dust settled Berkshire came away with the win. The Black Bears scored three times in the bottom of the ninth, overcoming a 4-2 deficit for a 5-4 walk-off-victory.
After Chris Briones and Manny Crespo led off the inning with back-to-back singles, Shane Hopper laid down a bunt that Allentown starter Nolan Fry fielded and then threw past first baseman Vic Davilla, allowing Mark Burnett (pinch running for Briones) to score from second. Pete Paciorek then hit a grounder to second, but it was not good enough to tie the game, as Crespo was tagged out at the plate. Ryan Jones drew the teams equal with an RBI single, forcing Allentown reliever Jose Guerrero to intentionally walk Brady Williams, setting up the force play at the plate with only one out. Tension mounted when catcher Allan Schrum struck out looking, sending thoughts of Bonus Baseball through the minds of the onlookers. However, that would not be the case. Shortstop Jose Mateo smacked a single to right center, bringing Paciorek home from third, and sending the Black Bears' faithful home happy. Mateo was the player of the game, going 3-for-5, adding the game winning RBI and making some solid defensive plays. Briones (BER) and Davilla (ALN) each wowed the crowd with solo blasts on the night, their fifth and ninth respectively.
Shane Waroff (3-0) picked up his third win of the year, throwing two and third innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits, walking none, and striking out three hitters. Reliever Jose Guerrero received the loss, allowing one unearned run, a walk and two hits in just two thirds of an inning. Starter Rick Guttormson struck out eight through six and two-thirds, while counterpart Nolan Fry had five Ks over eight innings.
The Black Bears will send pitching coach Jim Dedrick (0-0) to the mound against Allentown's Miguel Perez (2-3) on Sunday afternoon, as Berkshire looks for the three-game sweep of the Ambassadors at Wahconah Park.
