Walk-Off RBI Dooms Diablos
Jack Joffrion's walk-off RBI single gave the Shreveport Sports a 5-4 victory in 10 innings against the El Paso Diablos on Tuesday night from Fairgrounds Field.
The Shreveport Sports took a one-run lead in the bottom of the first. Mike Cervera hit the first batter he faced, Deacon Burns. Burns would advance all the way to third base on a throwing error by Cervera on an attempted pick-off. Chad Gambill picked up the RBI with a groundout to third base, which allowed Burns to score.
The Diablos answered in the top of the second inning. With one out, Matt Kent blasted a solo-homer to right field which tied up the game at one a piece. El Paso pieced together three runs in the top of the third. Walter Olmstead had an RBI single and the Diablos took advantage of two Shreveport errors to plate two other runs for the 4-1 advantage.
Shreveport cut the deficit to 4-2 in the bottom half of the inning. Deacon Burns led off with an infield single. Mike Cervera over threw Walter Olmstead on a pick-off throw for the second time in the game allowing Burns to jog to third base. Wade Robinson smacked a single through the right side which scored Burns.
Shreveport got within one run in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Chad Gambill singled to start the rally. Justin Humprhies then poked another single through the right side advancing Gambill to second. Tommy Bryant hammered a double to left which scored Gambill for the 4-3 deficit.
The Diablos got sharp relief work from Julio Frietes and Garvis Romero who combined for three and a third scoreless innings allowing just one base hit a piece.
The Diablos were just three outs away from the victory in the bottom of the ninth, when Ned Darley was summoned. Darley retired the first batter Brandon Hudson on a fly out. Darley then allowed three consecutive base hits, including a single by Wade Robinson to tie the game.
The Sports would win the game in the bottom of the tenth. J.P Schmidt laced a double down the left field line to get into scoring position. Jack Joffrion then lined a single up the middle which scored Schmidt for the game winning run.
The Diablos have now lost three of their last five games on the opponent's final at-bat.
Mike Cervera threw four and two third innings allowing two earned runs off of seven hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
Matt Yeatman threw five and two thirds innings allowing two earned runs with two walks and eight strikeouts.
Grant Wilson (2-0) threw three full allowing no runs off of two hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
Ned Darley (3-4) takes the loss as he threw one and a third innings allowing two earned runs off of five hits with no walks and no strikeouts.
The Diablos will wrap up the three game series with Shreveport on Wednesday night at 6:05 PM MST. Andy Torres will match up against Colby Miller for the Sports. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN Radio 1380 AM as well at www.diablos.com with Jon Barr on the call.
