Waldron, Penalty Killers Boost Hawks

John Waldron scored both Waterloo Black Hawks goals and the home team survived trying special teams circumstances in the late stages Wednesday, earning a 2-1 overtime win at Young Arena against the Madison Capitols.

Tied 1-1 with just over eight minutes remaining in regulation, goalie Emmett Croteau was assessed a minor for delay of game after clearing the puck over the glass. Madison ranks third in the USHL on the power play and subsequently went to a two-man advantage 55 seconds later when Mason Reiners was called for tripping. Waterloo came through the situation unscathed, successfully dislodging the visitors from the offensive zone a couple of times.

However, the teams skated five-on-five for only about three minutes before Tucker Ness was issued a boarding major, putting the Capitols back on the power play for the final 1:46 of regulation and well into overtime. After effectively keeping Madison on the perimeter, Waterloo caught a break when Caps made a bad change past the two minute mark of overtime, leading to a too many men on the ice call.

The sequence of penalties produced a short Hawks power play, and seconds after it ended, Waldron stepped from the top of the left circle into the high slot; waiting for traffic to arrive at the front of the net, he fired the puck past Simon Latkoczy for the game-winner at 3:54.

It had been a very active night for both goaltenders, but the only goal scored in the first 40 minutes came early in the second period. Madison's Brendan Lamb made his way into the offensive zone, navigating to the net through the right circle, before sending a low shot past Croteau. At the other end of the ice, Latkoczy made 15 saves in the period, most notably using his blocker to deny an early Owen Baker breakaway.

The chances favored Waterloo 25-21 after two periods; the Hawks finally solved Latkoczy at 7:13 of the third. From the left point, Patrick Geary fired a shot-pass into the slot. The illusion of a shot sent Latkoczy down into the butterfly position deep in his crease, so when the puck landed on Waldron's stick just outside the painted ice, he was able to aim just over the netminder's left pad and hit the back of the net.

Croteau earned his second straight victory with a 29-save night as Waterloo outshot Madison 35-30. Waterloo ended the contest five-for-five on the penalty kill.
