Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Springfield Cardinals won their third straight game, pulling to within two games of first place in the North Division with a 5-2 win over the Corpus Christi Hooks on Saturday night at Hammons Field.
A sold-out crowd of over 8,300 packed Hammons Field to watch St. Louis Cardinals' right-hander Adam Wainwright make a rehab start.
Wainwright didn't disappoint, throwing 64 pitches, while firing 4 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball before reaching his pitch limit. On the disabled list since mid-June with a sprained right middle finger, Wainwright fanned seven, while allowing only four hits.
Springfield wasted little time in backing Wainwright, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning. After Corpus Christi starter Casey Hudspeth (2-4) walked Daryl Jones to open the inning, Donovan Solano doubled down the left-field line, scoring Jones to make it 1-0. Solano eventually scored on a ground ball of the bat of Allen Craig, giving the Cards a 2-0 lead.
The Redbirds made it 3-0 in the second, as Wainwright picked up an infield single, then scored on a Jones triple.
Wainwright departed in the fifth with two outs, giving way to eventual winner Josh Dew. With a man aboard at first base, Dew (1-2) came in and fanned Wladimir Sutil for the final out of the inning. Dew would go on to throw a total of 2 1/3 innings, striking out five while yielding just one hit and one walk.
Jim Rapoport's sac fly in the fifth inning put Springfield up 4-0. Donovan Solano's RBI groundout in the sixth inning made it a 5-0 game.
Corpus Christi got to Cards' reliever Marco Gonzalez in the eighth, as Jonny Ash got an RBI single and Drew Sutton picked up an RBI groundout, making it 5-2. With the tying run at the plate though, Cards' reliever Zack Zuercher fanned Brian Bogusevic, before Luke Gregerson struck out Eli Iorg to end the eighth. Gregerson would work a scoreless ninth as well, picking up his tenth save of the year.
The Cardinals are now just two games behind Northwest Arkansas in the North Division. Springfield will send Justin Fiske (2-0) to the mound on Sunday, as he takes on Corpus Christi left-hander Trinidad Polin (5-5). Sunday is another Hiland Dairy Ice Cream Sunday and kids will "Run the Bases" thanks to the Killian Group of Companies. Game time is 6:10pm and tickets are available by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at www.springfieldcardinals.com. Gates open at 5:10pm on Saturday night. The Cards will be home through Monday night, taking on the Corpus Christi Hooks as part of a three-game home series.
