Mississippi Braves News Release

PENSACOLA, FL - The Pensacola Blue Wahoos (5-2, 35-40) scored six unanswered runs late to beat the Mississippi Braves (3-4, 32-45) 10-5 in the series opener at Blue Wahoos Stadium on Thursday night. The game saw two rain delays that totaled 1 hour, 48 minutes in duration. The win was Pensacola's fifth straight.

Pensacola struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning against M-Braves starter Bryse Wilson. T.J. Friedl singled to right to open the frame and then with one out, Shed Long lifted a fly ball into a strong wind gust to left for a two-run home run to put the Wahoos up 2-0.

The M-Braves answered in the top of the second inning thanks to two Pensacola errors. Tyler Marlette and Luis Marte reached on fielding errors by Pensacola shortstop Luis Gonzalez, setting up a two-run double to left by catcher Carlos Martinez. The two-out liner landed just under the glove of Pensacola left-fielder T.J. Friedl.

For the third straight inning, Pensacola put the leadoff man on base in the third. Aristides Aquino singled and then scored on a Taylor Sparks triple to right to break the tie. Chris Okey followed with a bloop single to right over the drawn-in infield to score Sparks and it was 4-2.

Wilson allowed four runs on six hits over 3.0 innings of work with one strikeout and no walks in his 10th M-Braves start. Wilson gave way to Tyler Pike when play was halted for 1 hour, 15 minutes because of rain in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Pike tossed 2.0 scoreless innings and allowed the M-Braves offense to get back in it. The Braves plated a one run in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Connor Lien.

Marte has been one of the hottest hitters in the Southern League lately and the 24-year-old shortstop extended his hitting streak to nine games with a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning. The long ball that landed in Pensacola Bay put the M-Braves up 5-4.

Pensacola went on to score six unanswered runs and pulled away in the series latter innings. Three runs came across in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-run double by Mitch Nay and RBI single from Okey. They tallied three more in the eighth inning on an RBI single by Friedl and a two-run double from Jose Siri to make it 10-4.

Sean McLaughlin (L, 0-1) suffered the loss, surrendering three runs in 1/3 of an inning during the sixth. Pensacola reliever Robinson Leyer (W, 4-2) gave up three runs but earned the win. Marte was 2-for-4 with a double and home run. He's batting .403 with a 1.019 OPS over his last 19 games since June 4, which leads all of Double-A baseball.

The M-Braves and Blue Wahoos will play game two of the six-game series on Friday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium. LHP Bruce Zimmermann will make his Double-A debut for the M-Braves against Pensacola RHP Wyatt Strahan (5-7, 6.75). First pitch is set for 6:35 pm with coverage beginning at 6:20 pm on 103.9 WYAB. Fans can also listen for free on the TuneIn Radio App.

The M-Braves return to Trustmark Park on Wednesday, July 4 for a Supersized Independence Day Fireworks Show. For tickets or more information fans can visit mississippibraves.com or call 888-BRAVES4.
