VT Mountaineers defeat Muskrats

Montpelier, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Laconia Muskrats, 16-9, in one of the longest nine-inning New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) games recorded. With the win, Vermont moves to 6-4 on the summer.

The game took three hours and forty-six to complete, with the teams combining for 25 runs on 37 hits. Each team also made four errors in the contest.

The Mountaineers trailed 8-7 entering the bottom of the sixth, when they pushed across four runs to take an 11-8 lead, one they would hold onto the rest of the way. Mike Vigliarolo (St. Louis) led off with a single. Blake Tiberi (Louisville) followed with a walk to make it first and second with no outs. Trey Amburgey (St. Petersburg) laid down a bunt that cue balled down the first base line and stayed fair to load the bases. Casey Rodrigue (Indiana) hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Vigliarolo from third to tie the game at eight. Two batters later, Josh Treff (Northeastern) reached on an error by Laconia shortstop Cornelius Copeland (St. Petersburg). Tiberi scored on the play to give the Mountaineers a 9-8 edge. Jack Parenty (Stony Brook) proceeded to hit an RBI single to score Amburgey and make it 10-8. Chandler Brock (Alabama-Huntsville) capped off the inning with an RBI single to make it 11-8 Vermont.

Vermont added two runs in the seventh and three in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

Laconia took an early 1-0 lead in the first and led by as many as four at 4-0 in the third before the Vermont bats put up five runs in the bottom of the third.

Ryan Davis (Le Moyne) started for the Mountaineers and went three and one-third innings. He gave up seven runs (four earned) on 10 hits and one walk. He struck out two.

Jordan Sheffield (Vanderbilt) took the hill for the Muskrats and dealt three innings. He allowed five earned runs on eight hits and three walks. He struck out four.

Neither starting pitcher earned a decision, as the bullpens were forced into extensive work.

Ty Wiest (Columbia) went two and two-thirds innings of relief, giving up one earned run on two hits and three walks. He also struck out one. Wiest got the win to improve to 1-0. Adam Picard (UMass) threw the final three innings for the Mountaineers, allowing one unearned run on two hits and two walks. He struck out three. Picard earned his first save of the season.

Eric Freeman (Tennessee) took the loss to fall to 1-1 on the summer. Freeman gave up four runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks. He struck out one.

The Mountaineers are back in action Saturday evening when they travel to Holyoke, Massachusetts to battle the Valley Blue Sox in an NECBL doubleheader.
