Great Falls Voyagers News Release

BILLINGS, Mont. - The Great Falls Voyagers saw their five-game winning streak come to an end Friday night, as they opened up their seven-game road trip with a 6-3 loss to the Billings Mustangs at Dehler Park.

After a couple quick scoreless innings on both sides to start the contest, Billings (17-21) broke the deadlock in the bottom of the third. With a pair in scoring position and one out, Taylor Sparks drove in the game's first run with a ground out, and then with two away Aristides Aquino doubled to drive in two more for the Mustangs.

Billings then added another run to their lead in the fourth. Jimmy Pickens and Kevin Franklin both collected hits to start the frame, then Pickens was brought home by Argenis Aldazoro.

Great Falls (23-15) scored their first run in the fifth, as Jake Peter brought home his fifth run over the last two games, driving in Tyler Shryock with a sacrifice fly.

The home team chased Voyager starter Matt Ball (2-2) in their half of the fifth. Again it was Aquino doing the damage for the Mustangs, as the right fielder blasted his tenth homer of the year to make it 6-1.

In the sixth, the Voyagers tried to begin a comeback as Dillon Haupt took Mustang reliever Jose Guzman (1-0) deep for his fourth homer of the year, and Shryock followed a few batters later with a run-producing single to get Great Falls within three.

That was as close as Great Falls got however, as the visitors mustered one hit against the Billings bullpen over the final three innings to have their five-game winning streak snapped.

With the end of tonight's contest, the first half of the Pioneer League season has come to an end with the Voyagers ending it as North Division champions with a 23-15 record.

The Voyagers and Mustangs will begin the second half of the season and continue this three-game series Saturday night at Dehler Park. Great Falls will turn to righty Dane Stone (3-0 2.43), while Billings will counter with fellow right-hander, Luke Moran (1-3, 6.09). First pitch is set for 7:05 and coverage will begin at 6:50 on 1400 AM KXGF and gfvoyagers.com.
