July 20, 2014 - Pioneer League (PL)
Great Falls Voyagers News Release

After allowing a season-high 16 hits last night, the Voyagers will try to end their three-game losing skid as they continue their four-game series at Idaho Falls.

Great Falls Voyagers (18-14) at Idaho Falls Chukars (18-14)

RHP Matt Ball (2-1, 4.15) vs. RHP Jake Newberry (3-0, 2.28)

4:00 p.m. - Melaleuca Field,  Idaho Falls, Idaho

GF SQUANDERS LEAD

For the second straight game, the Voyagers jumped out to an early lead but could not hold it. Last night it was a 5-0 lead that they surrendered after scoring four runs in the first and another in the second, all with two outs. After being held scoreless in the first, Idaho Falls scored at least once in each of the next six innings and took a 7-5 edge into the seventh. Patrick Palmeiro tied the game at seven with a two-run homer, his third of the year, to give him three RBIs on the night, but the Chukars answered with the game's decisive tally in the bottom of the frame.

OFFENSE HEATING UP

Although Great Falls has lost three of four to begin this road trip, the offense has started to break out, hitting .338 and averaging 6.5 runs per game. This comes on the heels of a seven-game homestand in which the Voyagers hit just .212 as a club and managed just 3.4 runs per contest, but saw them go 5-2 due to a 2.14 team ERA.

NOTHING FISHY ABOUT IT

Zach Fisher has been red hot for Great Falls on this road trip, with four straight multi-hit games. The former New Mexico State Aggie picked up his third three-hit effort of the trip last night, going 3-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Now 11-17 on the trip, the Fontana, Calif., native has boosted his average to .352 for the year, which places him seventh among Pioneer League hitters. The former 27th round pick has now homered twice, driven in seven, and scored five times with four extra-base hits in the first four games of the Voyagers seven-game road swing.

PITCHING STRUGGLES

After starting this trip with a three-hit shutout of Ogden, Great Falls pitching has had three straight rough nights. The Voyagers gave up seven runs on 12 hits Thursday, a season-high 10 runs on 12 hits including six home runs Friday, and eight runs on a season-high 16 hits Saturday. Their ERA is now at 6.82 for the road trip.
