GREAT FALLS - The Great Falls Voyagers (4-4) started a five-game run against the Billings Mustangs (6-2) Monday night at Centene Stadium, but Billings took better advantage of their scoring opportunities and prevailed 5-2. The loss left the Voyagers trailing the fast-starting Mustangs by two games in the early division race with four of the two teams' eight first-half games to play in the next week.

The tone of the night was set in the first when Billings put runners on second and third against Voyager starter JC Casey (1-1). Casey sawed-off Maddox's bat on a 2-1 pitch, but the Mustang slugger was able to muscle the ball just over the glove of first baseman Kyle Robinson for a two-run base hit. The Voyagers got one run back in the bottom half, but they left a pair of runners in scoring position with two outs and trailed 2-1.

The Voyagers manufactured repeated two-out chances against Billings as they had hits in the second, third, fifth, and sixth. However, all the base runners came with two outs, and the Voyagers came up empty in two out hitting. Meanwhile, the Mustangs added single runs in the fifth and sixth, the latter off another broken-bat bleeder with two outs, and led 4-1.

Robinson plated a Voyager run in the seventh with a sacrifice fly, but Micah Johnson was stranded on second base and the Mustangs added a run in the ninth to put the Voyagers in a three run whole. The Voyagers brought the tying run to the plate with one out in the ninth, helped by a Robinson single that extended his league-leading hitting streak to eight games, but Billings closer Mo Wiley induced a double play to end the game 5-2. In total, the Voyagers left 11 runners on base and 8 in scoring position in the game.

The Voyagers have another crack at Billings Tuesday night at Centene Stadium. It is Voyager Mini-Bat night presented by Rocky Mountain Sleep Disorder Clinic. The first 500 fans will receive mini-bats. It is also Taco John's Taco Tuesday, so crispy, softshell, and Taco Bravos are all discounted at TJ's Taco Zone down the third base line. The game starts at 7 and tickets can be purchased at gfboyagers.com, at the Centene Stadium box office, or by calling 452-5311.
