
Volcanoes Offense Carries Them to Win over Indians

KEIZER, Oregon - The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes had an intriguing performance in a six run win against the Spokane Indians with both teams combining for 28 runs.
Every player on the Volcanoes had at least one hit and one run, with shortstop Manuel Geraldo, first baseman Leo Rojas, right fielder Ashford Fulmer and center fielder Bryan Reynolds leading the way with a combined 16 RBIs.
It didn't take long for the Volcanoes to get on the scoreboard as they scored five runs in the first inning. Reynolds hit a two-RBI double down the left field line to bring in Geraldo and Fulmer. Rojas launched his first home run of the season on a three-run blast to right field as Reynolds and catcher John Riley scored on the play.
The Indians closed the gap in the top of the second, scoring three runs. Right fielder Darius Day hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score first baseman Todd McDonald. Second baseman Blaine Prescott then singled on a line drive to right field to bring in catcher Carlos Garay.
The Volcanoes' offense stayed hot as magma as Fulmer hit his eighth double of the season to left field to score third baseman Chase Compton and Geraldo, putting the score at 7-3 after two innings of play.
The Indians continued to cut back into the Volcanoes' lead as they scored two more runs in the top of the third. Left fielder Chad Smith scored on a wild pitch by Matt Krook and third baseman Charles LeBlanc scored on a pass ball. Center fielder Leody Taveras singled on a line drive to right field to bring in McDonald.
The Volcanoes continued their offensive onslaught when Geraldo had a bases-clearing triple to center field, knocking in Rojas, designated hitter Gustavo Cabrera and Compton. Fulmer hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in Geraldo. The final run of the inning came when Reynolds scored on a bases-loaded walk. After three innings, the Volcanoes led the Indians 12-6.
However, the Indians would not go down quietly, scoring three runs in the fourth inning. McDonald hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in designated hitter Preston Scott. Smith scored after Garay grounded out to third and Taveras hit an infield single to bring in LeBlanc.
The runs kept coming in bunches for the Volcanoes as Geraldo hit an RBI single to left field to score Rivera. Reynolds hit a sac fly to left to bring in Geraldo in the fourth inning.
The Volcanoes got another run in the fifth as Rivera hit an RBI single to right field to score Cabrera on the play. After five innings, the Volcanoes were winning 15-9.
The Indians scored one run in seventh inning when Tejeda singled on a fly ball to right field to bring in Day.
Rojas kept up his best game of the season for the Volcanoes when he hit his second homer of the game on a fly ball to right center to bring in Brusa.
Spokane got one more run in the eighth inning when Garay scored on an error by Geraldo. This was the final run of the game, as the Volcanoes would go on to win 17-11.
Left-hander Matt Krook made his seventh start of the season for the Volcanoes as he went up against right-handed Tyler Phillips.
Krook struggled as he only managed to pitch two and a third innings, giving up six runs (all earned), five hits, along with three strikeouts and six walks.
Kendrick Melo, Nick Sabo, Jeff Burke and Patrick Ruotolo came in for relief for the Volcanoes.
Sabo picked up the win tonight for the Volcanoes in this barnburner of a game as he pitched two and a third innings, giving up no runs, one hit, along with four strikeouts.
Tyler Phillips took the loss on the evening for the Indians. He pitched two and a third innings, giving up 11 runs (10 earned, one unearned), nine hits, along with three strikeouts and one walk.
Game five will be a rubber match and will take place tomorrow, Monday, August 8, at 6:35 p.m. Raffi Vizcaino will take the mound for the Volcanoes facing off against Kyle Cody at Volcanoes Stadium.
