Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
KEIZER, Oregon - Salem-Keizer left 11 runners on base and went 5-for-21 with runners in scoring position in an 8-5 loss to the Everett AquaSox on Saturday night. The AquaSox tallied four runs in the fourth and another three runs in the sixth as Everett prevented Salem-Keizer from clinching a series victory.
Despite the loss, the Volcanoes racked up 13 hits and saw multi-hit performances from five different players. Salem-Keizer left the tying run on first base in the home-half of the ninth with the last two batters of the game going down via the strikeout.
Gio Brusa, Heath Quinn, Kevin Rivera, Julio Pena and Chase Compton all notched two base hits each for the Volcanoes, headlined by two extra-base hits off the bat of Pena.
Everett got the scoring started with a single run in the top of the second. A solo homer by designated hitter Nick Thurman put the AquaSox in front.
The Volcanoes ensured Everett's early lead would be short lived by posting a two-run bottom of the second inning. Three consecutive batters reached on a walk, single and single, respectively, setting the stage for Chase Compton. Compton was hit by a pitch to push across the first run, and Manuel Geraldo drove in the second run of the frame on a sacrifice fly.
The AquaSox used a four-run fourth inning to jump out to a 5-2 lead -- a lead they wouldn't relinquish. On three singles and two walks, Everett scored its five runs.
Salem-Keizer kept the game interesting by scoring two runs in the fourth inning to pull within a single run. Rivera and Compton opened up the inning with singles, allowing a double off the bat of Brusa to score a pair of runs.
With three more runs in the top of the sixth inning, however, the AquaSox pulled away for good to claim their first win in the series.
The Volcanoes didn't go down without a fight in the home-half of the ninth. Brusa, Quinn and Riley all singled to load up the bases and put the tying run on base for Salem-Keizer. The exciting inning undramatically fizzled out with the last two batters striking out for the Volcanoes to end the home team's threat.
Neither starting pitcher fared well in Saturday's contest, with the Volcanoes Raffi Vizcaino (0-3) being tagged for five earned runs on eight hits in 4.0 innings of work. Salem-Keizer starting pitchers dropped to 4-17 on the season. AquaSox starter Jake Brentz only lasted 3.1 innings and allowed four earned runs. Vizcaino was handed the loss, while Everett's offense bailed out Brentz despite his pedestrian start. Paul Covelle was handed the win for 2.0 innings of scoreless relief.
By virtue of two wins to kick off the series, the Volcanoes still have a chance to clinch a series victory tomorrow from the AquaSox. First pitch is slated for 5:05 p.m. at Volcanoes Stadium with RHP Melvin Adon (0-3, 6.66 ERA) climbing the hill for Salem-Keizer.
