Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
KEIZER, Oregon - The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes could not finish the comeback attempt in the ninth as they fell to the Spokane Indians 6-4 in the first game of a five-game series.
The Indians got on the board early when center fielder Leody Taveras scored on a wild pitch by left-hander Mac Marshall with second baseman Blaine Prescott batting, putting the score at 1-0 after the first inning.
The Indians got their second run in the top half of the second when Taveras got his first RBI of the season on a single to center field that deflected off second baseman Manuel Geraldo. Third baseman Anderson Tejeda scored on the play.
In the bottom of the second, shortstop Ryan Howard hit his second home run of the season, bringing the score to 2-1.
The Volcanoes tied the game in the bottom of the third when first baseman Ryan Kirby grounded out to bring in second baseman Manuel Geraldo.
The Indians took back the lead in the top half of the fourth as Taveras got his second RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing in Tejada.
But the back-and-forth battle continued as the Volcanoes once again tied the game after right fielder Heath Quinn singled on a line drive to center field to bring in designated hitter Julio Pena. This put the score at 3-3 after four innings.
This game of cat-and-mouse continued in the top of the fifth when Indians first baseman Carlos Garay hit an RBI double to left field to bring in designated hitter Preston Scott. Later in the inning, shortstop Charles LeBlanc scored on a wild pitch by Marshall, moving the score to 5-3.
The Indians got another run in the top of the seventh as Tejada hit his first home run of the season on a bomb to right field.
The Volcanoes attempted a comeback in the ninth when center fielder Bryan Reynolds scored on a fielder's choice by second baseman Blaine Prescott. But that is all the Volcanoes could manage, with the final score being 6-4.
Marshall picked up the loss for the Volcanoes as he pitched five innings, allowing five runs (four earned and one unearned) off nine hits, along with eight strikeouts and one walk.
Victor Concepcion and Nick Sabo came in for relief for the Volcanoes. Concepcion pitched three innings, allowing one run off two hits, along with one strikeout and one walk. Sabo pitched one inning, allowing no runs off two hits, along with one strikeout and no walks.
In his Indians debut, Demarcus Evans pitched three and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs (one earned and two unearned) off five hits, along with four strikeouts and two walks.
