Volcanoes Comeback Comes up Just Short

Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
PASCO, Washington - In an atypical 7:15 p.m. start, the Volcanoes waited until their last two at bats to attempt a comeback against the Tri-City Dust Devils, but fell just short, losing 5-3.
Victor Concepcion took the mound for the Volcanoes in game two of the five game series between the two inter-division opponents. Concepcion lasted 5.0 innings, but gave up four runs in those five innings of work.
The Dust Devils scored a run in the second inning after the leadoff man singled to open the frame. Third baseman Fernando Tatis Jr. then moved to second base via a balk by Concepcion before moving to third base and scoring on two separate sacrifice flies.
Tri-City widened its lead in the fifth by stroking four singles and capitalizing on a Volcanoes error to score three runs in the inning, bringing the score to 4-0.
The Volcanoes waited until the eighth inning to score any runs when a leadoff home run by designated hitter Julio Pena opened the scoring for the visiting team. Catcher Zack Bowers, batting right after Pena, walked and came across the plate in the inning as well. Bowers scored in the completely opposite way that Pena did: moving over a base via a wild pitch and then scoring on a wild pitch with two outs.
The Dust Devils got a run in the eighth and staved off another comeback attempt by the Volcanoes in the ninth. The Volcanoes leadoff batter in the ninth, left fielder Heath Quinn, hit a double to get things started. A single by shortstop Ryan Howard moved Quinn to third and a single by first baseman Ryan Kirby scored Quinn.
The hopes of a comeback ended when the final Volcanoes batter hit into a double play to end the game. Howard had three hits in the game to lead the team.
Salem-Keizer will play game three of the five-game series Monday night, August 22, at Gesa Stadium with another 7:15 p.m. first pitch time. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
