Voit's 3 Points Leave Bulldogs Without on Saturday

HAMILTON, ONTARIO. The Hamilton Bulldogs finished out a back-to-back weekend on Saturday afternoon, hosting a matinee against the Sarnia Sting. It was the first meeting in 1,022 days between the two sides dating back to January 2020.

The first period mainly belonged to Matteo Drobac, making show stopping save after show stopping save. Including denying Nolan Burke who was sent in alone to his goal and a brilliant split save on defenseman Ryan Mast who dragged the puck forehand to backhand right in front of the goal, Drobac was at the very top of his game. The work of the Bulldogs netminder paid off as Hamilton, on their only power-play of the game, struck first at 17:53. Lucas Moore fired a shot from the middle of the blueline that Benjamin Gaudreau held off but the rebound found Cole Brown who worked to his right before sliding the puck across the crease to Avery Hayes, delivering his 9th of the season, for a share of the league lead, getting the Bulldogs off to a positive start. Sarnia countered quickly, at 18:56 as Jorian Donovan cleared the offensive zone, Ryan Mast stepped up in neutral ice to knock the puck over to Ty Voit who fed Nolan Burke in a 2-on-1, just getting the puck over Drobac 's shoulder and under the bar to tie the score 1-1 through 20 minutes.

The second period was a stalemate into the middle of the frame with both Matteo Drobac and Benjamin Gaudreau putting on a goaltending clinic. After Callum Cheynowski had been nabbed for slashing at 6:49, Artem Grushnikov was given an extremely controversial boarding penalty just 19-second later giving Sarnia a 5-on-3 for 1:41. The Bulldogs fought their way deep into the lengthy power-play but with 7-seconds left in the 5-on-3, Ty Voit tossed the puck into the Hamilton crease where it bounced off Marcus Limpar Lantz and landed on the tape of Marko Sikic who was able to fire the puck past a sprawling Matteo Drobac to give Sarnia their first lead of the game at 8:42. Despite some nice cycle work from the line of Lawson Sherk, Florian Xhekaj & Braeden O'Keefe, the Bulldogs hit the locker room after 40 minutes trailing 2-1.

Hamilton put on a push in the final frame, with an adjusted line of Patrick Thomas, Cole Brown & Lawson Sherk compiling chances around Gaudreau's goal but weren't able to break through.

The Dogs' best chance of the final frame through Logan Morrison breaking off the right half boards, cutting through the Sarnia defence and turning the puck to his forehand for a shot that created a rebound but bounced over the sticks of both Avery Hayes and Ryan Humphrey. With the clock ticking down, Marek Vanacker was called for a stick-on-stick slash after having his helmet knocked off in a hit away from the puck. With the Bulldogs shorthanded they looked to get Drobac to the bench and try their luck 5-on-5 but were never able to get full possession with Angus MacDonell hitting the empty net at 18:44, securing a 3-1 Sarnia win.

The Hamilton Bulldogs return to action for a rather light weekend, hosting their 2022 Eastern Conference Final opponent, the North Bay Battalion on Friday November 4th at FirstOntario Centre with a 7:00pm puck drop.
