October 29, 2022 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Erie Otters News Release

Erie, Pennsylvania - Riding back-to-back regulation wins for the Erie Otters for the first time this season propels the team into a battle against the top team in the Ontario Hockey League, the Windsor Spitfires. Windsor comes in after the highest scoring game of the 2022-23 OHL season on Friday night, crushing the Niagara IceDogs 11-3 on the road. With Erie grabbing their highest-scoring game of the season in their last game, the two offenses would look to outdo each other in a highly-anticipated contest. Kyle Downey, acquired from Windsor recently, would get the start in net against his former team for Erie.

Windsor would come out and take the first four shots of the game through the first 10 minutes of the game, being rewarded with the game's first goal from Thomas Johnston (2) to make it 1-0 Windsor. The Spitfires wouldn't have to wait long to make it a two-goal game, as Oliver Peer (7) would score less than three minutes later to take a 2-0 lead. Erie would finally record their first shot after the media timeout. With :91 left in the period, Colby Saganiuk (2) would grab his first goal of the night to make it a 2-1 game before the end of the period. Erie would have life, trailing 2-1 after 20. Windsor would lead in shots 8-7.

A quick-start to the second period would seem like a momentum-sucker for the Otters, as Windsor's Matthew Maggio (9) would score just :55 into the new frame. Erie would grab momentum back less than a minute later as Brett Bressette (6) would grab his third goal (and fifth point) in three games. From there, Erie would weather a neutral-zone forecheck storm from the Spitfires. On the other side of the storm, Erie would take control. In the span of :30 from 16:16 of the second to 16:46, Erie would grab three goals from Kaleb Smith (2), Liam Gilmartin (4), and Spencer Sova (4). An absolute shift of momentum would take the Otters into the third period with a 5-3 lead.

The story would remain the same in the third for the Otters, as Carey Terrance (3) and Colby Saganiuk (3) would lead the Otters to their highest-scoring game of the season with goals 7:04 apart. A late goal from AJ Spellacy (3) with :45 seconds left would break up Erie's six-unanswered goals, but the final result would remain the same. Erie would down the Windsor Spitfires, and hand the team their first regulation loss of the 2022-23 OHL season. Kyle Downey would stop 21/25 in the revenge game against his former team, and earn first star honors.

Erie has won three-straight games in regulation, and moves to 6-4-0-2. The three-in-three weekend for the Otters comes to a close on Sunday afternoon, as the team hosts their foe from Friday night, the Kitchener Rangers. Erie snapped Kitchener's four-game win streak with a 6-3 victory on the road, with Colby Saganiuk grabbing the game-winning goal.
