May 31, 2008 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Calgary Vipers News Release

Edmonton got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning with a triple from Ruddy Yan in his Cracker-Cats debut. Yan ended up scoring on a wild pitch from Calgary's starter Nate Melek for the 1-0 lead.

The Calgary Vipers scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat the Edmonton Cracker-Cats 5-4 at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta in the first half of the double-header. It is the Snakes fourth win in a row and it came thanks to a two out rally in the last inning with Jorge Mejia delivering the game winning two run triple.

In the bottom of the third inning Colin Moro belted a double off the centerfield wall in his first plate appearance as a Viper is his hometown park. Darryl Brinkley followed and belted a towering two run homerun to left centerfield for the 2-1 advantage.

Right back came the Cracker-Cats in the next half inning with a leadoff double off the bat of Chris Van Rossum. After a groundout moved him to third base Kevin House was walked to put runners at the corners. Before a pitch was thrown to the next batter House bolted for second base and Melek stepped off the rubber and threw to second base. Nelson Castro threw to Jose Morbin at first base and he threw to second basemen Jorge Mejia who tagged House out but while that was happening Van Rossum stole home and scored just before the tag out to tie the game at two.

Three doubles in the top of the sixth inning gave Edmonton their second lead of the game. Joe Jiannetti leadoff the inning with one and Van Rossum and Jordan Lundberg followed picking up one RBI a piece for the 4-2 lead.

Drew Miller hit his third homerun in as many games in the bottom of the inning to close the deficit down to one at 4-3. For Miller it extended his on base streak to six games and was another homerun to centerfield over the 20 foot fence 400 feet away.

In the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs Moro worked a fantastic eight pitch at-bat for a walk and was followed by Brinkley who also walked with the Cracker-Cats twice one strike away from winning the game. Jorge Mejia extended his hitting streak to six games with a two run triple to score both runners and win the game for Calgary 5-4.

The win went to Geoff Freeborn (1-1) after pitching a scoreless seventh inning and the loss to Pete Sikaras (1-1)

Game two of the double header sees Jordy Alexander (0-1) throw against Chris Mowday (0-0)
