Chico Outlaws News Release

CHICO, CA - The Chico Outlaws were hoping a little home cooking would get them into the win column, but despite a crowd of over 4,000 on hand at Nettleton Stadium Friday for the team's home opener, the Outlaws remained the only winless team in the Golden Baseball League with an 11-5 loss to the Long Beach Armada.

The visiting Armada jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, batting around in the 1st inning against Outlaws starter Rudy Quinonez. Ex-Outlaw Ryan Lehr got Long Beach on the board with a two-out solo homer, and following a single and two walks to load the bases, Dave Parrish delivered a three-run double to right and then scored on a Norm Hutchins base hit. The Armada added another run in the 2nd - Chris Klemm singled home Steve Moss to put Long Beach up 6-0. Chico took advantage of a bases-loaded wild pitch by Long Beach starter Dustin Gober to plate a run in the bottom of the 2nd...then in the 4th Gerardo Verastegui's two-out double knocked in Lino Garcia to make the score 6-2.

The Armada pushed the lead back to six courtesy of a two-out, two-run homer by Hutchins in the 5th...but in the bottom of the inning the Outlaws struck for three - Todd Gossage's double with the bases loaded drove in Steve Boggs and Jose Valdez...Garcia then contributed a sac fly to bring home Gossage and pulled Chico to within 8-5. But that was as close as the Outlaws would get - Long Beach plated a run in the 6th and two more in the 8th to once again build up a six-run cushion...and Armada relievers Nick Bierbordt, Justin Segal, Sean Buller and Nick Cavanaugh combined to allow just one hit through four scoreless innings to lock down the series-opening victory and hand Chico their fifth straight defeat to start the season.

Gober (1-0) worked five innings to earn the victory, with Quinonez (0-2) being saddled with the loss. Long Beach piled up 11 hits on the night, with four players -Moss, Lehr, Hutchins and Tony Torcato - delivering two hits apiece...Valdez had two of Chico's five hits as the Outlaws fell to 0-5 on the year; the Armada improved to 3-1. Game two of the series is set for Saturday, with lefty Derrick Loop (0-0) on the mound for Chico...right-hander Rik Currier gets the starting nod for Long Beach. Game time is 7:05pm; hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play beginning at 6:35pm on ESPN 101.7 FM or 1340 AM. The game can also be heard on the internet at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
