Three Homeruns Pace Vipers to Victory

The Calgary Vipers blasted three homeruns and scored ten unanswered runs in defeating the Edmonton Cracker-Cats 10-2 in front of 1830 fans at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. The Cracker-Cats scored two runs in the top of the first but after that it was all Snakes with four separate multi-run innings. Jordy Alexander made the start and picked up his first victory going five innings and giving up only three hits for two runs. Calgary has now won five straight games and are in first place in the North Division of the Golden Baseball League.

The Cracker-Cats started off game two with a double down the left field line by Ruddy Yan. After a sacrifice bunt, Joe Jiannetti walked and Chris Van Rossum blooped a single in for a run batted in and advanced Jiannetti to third base. Josh Carter supplied a sacrifice fly out for the 2-0 lead.

After two long at-bats in the bottom of the inning by Darryl Brinkley and Jorge Mejia, Nelson Castro doubled with two outs. Drew Miller followed with a walk and Jose Morbin hit his second homerun of the season for the 3-2 advantage.

Felix Jose started the bottom of the second inning with a broken bat single and promptly stole second base. Colin Moro was hit by a pitch and Travis Drader laid down a perfect bunt for a single and in attempt to throw him out pitcher Chris Mowday committed an error allowing Jose to score. Following a Brinkley walk Mejia knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly for the 5-2 lead.

In the bottom of the third inning Calgary once again scored with a leadoff homerun by Miller. For Miller it was his fourth homerun in his last four games, hitting one in each contest. After Morban walked, Edmonton's Phil Sobkow came into the game and gave up a two run shot to Jose for his first in a Vipers jersey and to make the score 8-2. Jose finished the evening three for three with two runs scored and batted in.

Two more runs were scored in the bottom of the sixth inning with a leadoff double by Jose and with Jorge Tang in to pinch-run Drader singled him home. After Brinkley singled and Mejia walked, Castro cashed a run with a groundout to cap the scoring at 10-2.

Alexander (1-1) picked up the victory while Mowday (0-1) took the loss giving up seven runs in his two innings. Robert Coello and Jon Huizinga each threw a scoreless inning in relief out of the bullpen.

On Sunday afternoon at 1:30 PM (MDT) the Vipers will go for the four game series sweep with Dallas Mahan (0-0) toeing the rubber for the Vipers against Nick Petterson (0-0). Tickets can be ordered by calling 277-BALL (2255). All games can be heard live online at www.calgaryvipers.com.

Two teams never before seen in Calgary will then head in for the next home stand. The St. George Roadrunners with former Chicago White Sox infielder Liu Rodriguez will be here June 11, 12 and 13. Then the defending champion Chico Outlaws hit town. Friday, June 13th it's an afternoon "Skip out of Work" special so fans can watch both the Vipers and then the Stamps exhibition game. On Saturday June 14th it's Ripley's Believe It or Not Day at Foothills Stadium. A full contingent from the famous tourist attraction will be in Calgary to take possession of the 10 bats acquired in the Odom trade and to present the check to the Vipers Children's Charity. On Sunday, June 15th it's the Vipers Father's Day Extravaganza. Hall of Famer Gary Carter will be the Vipers special guest to throw out the first pitch and sign autographs. The Calgary Minor Softball Association will be holding their Opening ceremonies following the game and will be out in full force. The Vipers will be teaming with PharmaChoice Drug Stores and the Calgary Prostate Society to raise awareness for prostate cancer treatments. And the Vipers will be helping to launch the new Warner Brothers movie "Get Smart" with Agent 99 and Maxwell Smart making a special appearance.
