Vipers Too Much For Silver Sox

June 22, 2008 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Reno Silver Sox News Release

Calgary was too much for Reno to handle as the Vipers sunk their teeth into the Silver Sox, defeating them twice, 14-3 and 10-5, in last night?s double header at Peccole Park bringing the Silver Sox record to 7-17 on the season.

In a game riddled with eight errors for the Silver Sox, the defense could not manage to find a way to support starting pitcher Jeremy Flanagan (0-2) who allowed ten runs, only four earned, on eight hits while striking out two in his four innings.

Coming in to relieve Flanagan was Mario Guilin who threw two innings, giving up two runs on four hits, and striking out four. Finishing the game out for the Silver Sox was Steve Alexander who allowed two runs on two hits.

The Silver Sox offense couldn?t produce as they had ten hits with only three runs, leaving eight on base. C D.J. Dixon scored on a single by DH Ryan Brown. The Vipers kept the Silver Sox runners at bay until the fifth inning when Dixon singled to score 3B Brett Flowers. Dixon was two for four with one run and one RBI. Flowers would go two for two against the Vipers pitching staff giving him a hit and an RBI in the first game.

The large amount of errors was too costly for the Silver Sox as they couldn?t climb back into the game, dropping the first game of the doubleheader with a 14-3 loss.

In the second game of the night, starting pitcher Steve Russell (2-3) took the loss as he struggled at the plate in the first two innings. Russell gave up seven runs, six earned, on seven hits. Though Russell struggled he regained his composure as he walked four and struck out seven Vipers in his five innings.

Making his debut for the Silver Sox was Chris Fields who threw one inning allowing two runs on one hit, but striking out two. Finishing the game out was Eduardo Del La Cruz who allowed one run and struck out one.

The Silver Sox put their first runs on the board when CF Ryan Crespi doubled to knock in C Ryan Brown in the third. Crespi went one for four with one run and one RBI. LF Gary Harris added to the board by hitting a rocket triple that scored Crespi. Harris would then proceed to steal home on a passed ball making the score 7-3 after the third inning. Harris went one for four with an RBI and a run.

The only two runs the Silver Sox would be able to put on the board after that was a solo homerun in the fourth inning by 3B John Hattig, who was one for three with one run and one RBI, and 1B Brett Flowers who hit a base hit RBI to score RF Ross McCoy.

Not being able to put up enough runs, the Vipers took the win for the second game sweeping the Silver Sox in the three game series.
