Chico Outlaws News Release
CHICO, CA - Rookie Berek Fasking picked up the first victory of his pro career, allowing just one unearned run through seven innings and benefitting from a 12-hit attack as the Chico Outlaws defeated the Edmonton Cracker Cats 8-1 in front of over 3,000 Saturday night at Nettleton Stadium.
The game began as a pitcher's duel between Fasking and former big leaguer Ricardo Rodriguez, making his Edmonton debut. The two right-handers traded zeroes for the first three innings of the contest until the Cracker Cats broke through with a run in the 4th - Carlos Arroyo's two-out single plated Chris Van Rossum to give Edmonton the early lead...it would turn out to be the only run they would score all night. Chico answered right back with two runs in the bottom of the 4th - Jose Valdez doubled home Eric Pringle and then scored on Lino Garcia's infield single. In the 5th two throwing errors by Rodriguez resulted in three unearned runs and a 5-1 Chico lead.
While Fasking continued to keep the Cracker Cats off the scoreboard, the Outlaws went up 6-1 when Shane Cronin led off the 6th with a solo home run. Edmonton made one last attempt to climb back into the contest, loading the bases off Fasking with nobody out in the 8th...but the Cracker Cats came away empty as Outlaws reliever Rob Ellis came in to squelch the rally and maintain Chico's five run lead. The Outlaws would put the game officially out of reach in the bottom of the 8th when Cronin doubled home Gabe Riley and later scored himself on a base hit by Pringle to make it 8-1. Chico closer Todd Gelatka came on in the 9th to get the final three outs (Edmonton once again left the bases loaded) and give the Outlaws their second straight victory and fourth against the Cracker Cats in five tries this season.
Fasking (1-2) allowed just three hits to pick up the win, with Rodriguez (0-1) suffering the loss. Valdez led Chico's offensive charge with three hits, including a pair of doubles...Cronin finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and Casey Garrison also enjoyed a two-hit night. Arroyo was the lone Cracker Cat with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4. Saturday's win improved the Outlaws season record to 9-15, while Edmonton slipped to 11-14 on the year. Chico goes for the series sweep Sunday in a game scheduled for 6:05pm; newly-signed lefthander Beau Hintz (0-0) gets the start...the Cracker Cats will counter with righty Augustine Montero (3-1). Hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play beginning at 5:40pm on ESPN 101.7 FM or AM 1340. The broadcast will also be streamed live on the internet through the Outlaws official website, www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
