CALGARY, AB - On Monday night, the Calgary Vipers never trailed en route to an 8-4 victory over the St. George RoadRunners in a meeting between the two division leaders in the Golden Baseball League at Foothills Stadium.
With the loss, the RoadRunners drop to 12-5 on the season but maintain the best record in the league by one-half game over the Vipers.
St. George starter Luis Gonzalez (L, 2-3) could not keep the Calgary offense at bay during the first two innings. Jorge Mejia knocked in Fehlandt Lentini with a grounder after Lentini singled and Nelson Castro double both men into scoring position.
A.J. Valentine tied the game in the visitor's second with a lead-off homer off the Foothills Stadium scoreboard in right.
Calgary wasted no time extending the lead to four on an error and timely two-out hits. Lentini smacked a two-run double while Castro and Mark Okano added RBI singles to give the Vipers a 5-1 advantage.
The RoadRunners traded runs with Calgary in the fourth. Jose Rodriguez doubled to the gap scoring Angel Sanchez who led off with a single. The Snakes answered with Mejia'a second RBI, a single plating Lentini.
St. George cut the Viper lead to 6-3 on an RBI double by Yosvany Almario scoring Cody Nowlin from first.
Reigning GBL Rookie of the Year Colin Moro provided an insurance 2-run double in the Viper eighth to give Calgary an 8-3 advantage.
Nowlin led off the ninth inning with a solo homer off Jon Huisinga, his first of the year. Huisinga recovered by striking out the next three RoadRunners to close the game.
Viper starter Reggie Rivard tossed 6.1 innings allowing three runs on five hits to pick up his second win.
St. George managed only six hits on the night. Lentini went 4-for-5 to highlight Calgary's 15-hit performance.
