Edmonton Capitals News Release
The Edmonton Capitals (9-8) hosted a team made up entirely of Colombian players, playing out of Yuma, Arizona and the fans could have used some Juan Valdez brew as the game against the Scorpions (3-11) went to extra innings. In the bottom of the tenth with the bases-loaded, Gary Harris battled curveball after curveball until he hit a line drive, deep enough to centre field to score Darryl Brinkley from third and win the game 4-3.
"It felt good. I was up in a situation where I couldn't strike out. I needed to hit a fly or knock it past the infield for a base hit," said Harris about his approach during the tenth inning at-bat. "In that situation, I'm giving myself up for the team."
Much of the game was an outstanding pitcher's duel between the Scorpion's Carlos Ladeuth, who gave up just one run off two hits over eight innings of work and the Capitals' Trevor Caughey, who was making his Caps debut after being picked up in a trade over the weekend. Caughey (pronounced Coy), was the Golden Baseball League Pitcher of the Year Last year with Chico, and gave up three runs on four hits over eight innings pitched, while striking out six Yuma hitters.
"Being my first game, I was almost thrown right into it. It was exciting," stated Caughey about his first start as a Capital. "I met Brent (Bowers) in Colombia. I wanted to come here. I made the team and it's awesome how we're getting treated."
Aaron Easton (3-0) picked up the win in relief and was aided in the tenth by a slick double-play turned by Harris and Aaron Hornostaj at second base. Dorian Castro (0-3) took the loss for the Scorpions after giving up two hits and an intentional walk in the tenth inning before the Harris sacrifice fly.
Chad Ehrnberger continued to raise his batting average (.344), going three for five on the evening with two runs scored to lead the Capitals hitters. Norm Hutchins and Aaron Hornostaj also chipped in with two hits each. Hornostaj led all hitters with two runs batted in.
The Capitals will be back in action tonight for game two of the three-game series against Yuma. $2 Tuesday makes its return at the concessions as all Kids Combos will be reduced from their normal $3 price to just two bucks. The Caps will attempt to put back-to-back wins together for the first time since playing their first two games at Tucson on June 1 and June 2. Yuma has now lost five straight.
