
Vipers Take 2-0 Series Lead

For a second straight night the Calgary Vipers collected 16 hits en route to a 11-4 victory over the Tucson Toros before 3213 fans at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson, Arizona. With the victory the Vipers take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five Golden Baseball League Championship Series. The Snakes took a commanding lead half way through the contest at 8-0 thanks to three home runs. Joe Sergent (2-0) recorded the victory throwing six innings and giving up three runs while walking one and striking out five. Sergent did not allow a run in the first six innings before running into some trouble before leaving the game in the seventh.
At the plate Wilver Perez had a monster night with a home run, five runs batted in, and two runs scored. Sergio Pedroza also had a big night with three hits including one home run, three runs scored, and two batted in. Fehlandt Lentini had the other homer for the Vipers which was one of his three hits to go along with two runs scored.
Travis Hughes was solid for the Vipers coming out of the bullpen as he threw a scoreless and hitless inning and a third with a strikeout. Hughes came into the game with the bases loaded in the eighth inning and did not allow a run. Vince Davis (0-2) took the loss giving up nine hits and eight runs in his four innings.
Lentini opened the scoring for Calgary in the top of the first inning with a solo home run. Nelson Castro followed with a single, Kit Pellow advanced Castro to third base with a base hit, and Perez collected a run batted in groundout for a 2-0 advantage.
The Vipers doubled their lead in the third as Lentini singled, stole second base, and Pedroza stroked a two-run homer for a 4-0 score.
In the fourth frame the Snakes added to their lead as Drew Miller walked and Colin Moro laced a RBI double for a 5-0 lead.
The scoring continued in the visitor's half of the fifth inning as Pedroza started the frame with a single, Kit Pellow walked, and Perez launched a three-run big fly for a 8-0 Calgary advantage.
Tucson got onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh as Ryan Priddy singled, Skip Adams was hit by a pitch, Junior Spivey plated both with a double, and Jim Rushford singled in one for a 8-3 game.
Right back answered the Vipers with three runs in the next half inning as Castro and Pedroza singled followed by back-to-back-to-back RBI base hits from Perez, Miller, and Moro for 11-3 lead.
The Toros got a run back for a 11-4 score in the home half of the eighth frame as Adams and Spivey singled, Dustin Yount walked, and Lino Garcia was hit by a pitch for a RBI.
The Vipers now return home to Calgary and Foothills Stadium on Friday September 11th at 7:05 PM MDT for Game 3.
If necessary Games 4 & 5 will also be in Calgary on Saturday September 12th at 5:35 PM MDT and Sunday September 13th at 3:05 PM MDT.
