Vipers Scoreless in 18 Innings After 6-0 Loss
July 5, 2008 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Calgary Vipers News Release
The Calgary Vipers were shutout for the second straight game in their 6-0 loss to the Long Beach Armada at Blair Field in Long Beach, California. After not being shutout in the first 36 games of the season Calgary has now not scored a run in back-to-back games. With the Edmonton Cracker-Cats playing a double-header and losing the first game the Vipers magic number to clinch the first half of the Golden Baseball League season is now two. The Vipers now have six games remaining in the first half of the schedule.
In the bottom of the first inning Steve Moss doubled and Chris Klemm singled for the only run Long Beach would need. Norm Hutchins followed with a single and after stealing second both Klemm and Hutchins scored on a Ryan Lehr two run base hit.
Two more runs were added in the bottom of the fourth inning with a Tony Torcato single, Lehr double, David Martinez sacrifice fly, Cleatus Davidson walk, and a Mike Glomb RBI single.
The Armada made it 6-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning on a Martinez single and after reaching second base on an error and third base on a wild pitch he score on a Glomb sacrifice fly.
Darryl Brinkley extended his on base streak to 28 straight games.
This series concludes Sunday July 6th at 6:05 PM (MDT) with Jordy Alexander (3-3) taking the mound. Next the Vipers will play the St. George RoadRunners with a double-header on Monday July 7th, regularly scheduled game Tuesday July 8th, and another twin-bill Wednesday July 9th. After a day off the road trip concludes against the Edmonton Cracker-Cats Friday July 11th, Saturday July 12th, and Sunday July 13th.
On Tuesday July 15th Mike Busch will lead the 20-man Golden Baseball League All-Star squad as they take on the United League's All-Stars in a battle of two of the top independent leagues in San Angelo, Texas. Joining Busch from the Vipers will be ace and pitching coach Evan Greusel, designated hitter Felix Jose, and outfielders Darryl Brinkley and Drew Miller.
The Snakes return home to Foothills Stadium Friday July 18th at 7:05 PM (MDT) to open a six day home stand which will feature seven games against the Chico Outlaws and the Yuma Scorpions.
