Chico Outlaws News Release
CHICO, CA - The Chico Outlaws attracted a Nettleton Stadium-record 4,699 fans for the team's annual 4th of July game, but the Outlaws couldn't produce any in-game fireworks as the Reno Silver Sox held Chico to just seven hits and used a five run 9th inning to cruise to an 8-2 victory Friday in the opener of a three-game holiday weekend set.
Up until the final frame, the contest featured fine performances by starting pitchers Greg Bicknell of Chico and Reno's Jesse Hall. Runs were few and strikeouts were many as the two hurlers worked deep into the game. The Silver Sox took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd when Ryan Brown led off the inning with a his third home run of the year...in the 4th Reno went up 2-0 when D.J. Dixon led off the frame with a double and came home on a two-out single by Doug Sanders. The Outlaws sliced the lead in half with a run in the 4th - Matt Ceriani delivering a sacrifice fly to plate Julian Benavidez.
Reno made it 3-1 in the 7th when Eric Pringle's two out throwing error allowed Ryan Crespi to score from second...but the Outlaws responded with a run in the bottom of the 7th as Casey Garrison extended his team-high hitting streak to 14 games with an RBI single to center that plated Pringle. The score remained 3-2 until the 9th when the Silver Sox blew the game open, batting around and taking advantage of two Chico errors, two walks, a bases-loaded hit by pitch and RBI singles by Crespi and Ross McCoy to plate five runs and go up 8-2. Former Outlaws reliever Derrick Landavazo plunged the dagger in the bottom of the 9th - after giving up a pinch-hit single to Gabe Riley to lead off the inning, Landavazo struck out Pringle, Steve Boggs and Jesse Kovacs to end the game and preserve Reno's series-opening victory.
Hall (3-3) allowed just a run on four hits and struck out eight in six innings of work to earn the victory; Landavazo fanned seven Outlaws batters en route to his first save of the season...Bicknell (2-2) allowed just two earned runs and struck out seven in seven innings but was still saddled with the loss. McCoy went 3-for-5 to lead Reno's 11-hit attack, with Crespi and Sanders adding two safeties apiece...Boggs paced Chico with a 2-for-5 night. Friday's loss dropped Chico to 12-24 on the season; the Silver Sox improved to 13-22 for the year. Game two of the series is set for Saturday, with Jason Roach (0-5) getting the start for Chico. First pitch is 7:05pm...hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and AM 1340; the game can also be heard on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
