
Snakes Shutout For First Time

The Calgary Vipers were shutout for the first time this season in their 10-0 loss against the Long Beach Armada at Blair Field in Long Beach, California. The Armada have now taken three of four games against Calgary this season. With the loss and a Edmonton Cracker-Cats win the Vipers lead in the North Division is 3.5 games with seven games remaining in the first half. The Snakes magic number remains at three.
Long Beach started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a Dan Trumble single, Steve Moss walk, Chris Klemm reaching on a fielder's choice, a throwing error to move the runners into scoring position, and a Tony Torcato two run single.
Another two runs were added in the bottom of the third inning with a Trumble double and two RBI base hits from Moss and Norm Hutchins for the 4-0 lead.
After a Trumble single in the bottom of the fourth inning, Moss hit a two run homerun for the 6-0 advantage.
The Armada made it 7-0 with a Torcato triple and Ryan Lehr RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Long Beach hit double digits in runs in the bottom of the sixth with walks to Moss and Klemm, a Torcato RBI single, Lehr walk, David Ramirez RBI hit by pitch, and a Cleatus Davidson RBI base on balls for the 10-0 score.
Darryl Brinkley extended his on base streak to 27 straight games.
Calgary starter Evan Greusel (6-1) suffered his first loss of the season.
This series continues Saturday July 5th at 7:35 PM (MDT) with Nate Melek (2-1) starting. Sunday July 6th at 6:05 PM (MDT) the series concludes with Jordy Alexander (3-3) taking the mound. Next the Vipers will play the St. George RoadRunners with a double-header on Monday July 7th, regularly scheduled game Tuesday July 8th, and another twin-bill Wednesday July 9th. After a day off the road trip concludes against the Edmonton Cracker-Cats Friday July 11th, Saturday July 12th, and Sunday July 13th.
On Tuesday July 15th Mike Busch will lead the 20-man Golden Baseball League All-Star squad as they take on the United League's All-Stars in a battle of two of the top independent leagues in San Angelo, Texas. Joining Busch from the Vipers will be ace and pitching coach Evan Greusel, designated hitter Felix Jose, and outfielders Darryl Brinkley and Drew Miller.
The Snakes return home to Foothills Stadium Friday July 18th at 7:05 PM (MDT) to open a six day home stand which will feature seven games against the Chico Outlaws and the Yuma Scorpions.
