Rio Grande Valley Vipers News Release
MCALLEN, TEXAS - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers and Clear Channel Radio announced Monday that all game broadcasts and episodes of the weekly talk show, Inside the Vipers Nest, will be broadcast on Classic Hits 1700 KVNS, which also streams online at classic1700.com, and will soon be available on smart phones using the iHeartRadio application, during the 2011-12 season.
The first episode of Inside the Vipers Nest will air in the week leading up to the NBA Development League draft.
"The opportunity to allow our fans to hear our programming on their phones is one we are very excited about. Now our fans will always be able to tune in, no matter where they are," Vipers President Bert Garcia said.
"Clear Channel Radio looks forward to the upcoming Vipers basketball season plus taking our partnership to the next level by airing the games on Classic Hits 1700 KVNS. Hopefully we can help the Vipers bring another NBA D-League Championship to the RGV," Clear Channel Operations Manager Billy Santiago said.
Jonah Goldberg takes over as the play-by-play "Voice of the Vipers" while returning as the host of Inside the Vipers Nest. Goldberg has been a part of Vipers broadcasts since February 2008, as a color commentator for home games for the first year and a half before adding studio host for road games to his responsibilities during the 2009-10 season. Last season, Goldberg provided the play-by-play for all road games. Goldberg will fly solo on Vipers broadcasts this season. He is expected to reach career-broadcast number 1,000 during the regular season. This is Goldberg's second season as host of Inside the Vipers Nest after seeing time as a fill-in host the previous year.
"Jonah has earned this opportunity through hard work and a tireless dedication to the Vipers. He has been an excellent ambassador for the Vipers and he gets better with every broadcast. We have no doubt that he will one day be able to use this experience to make the leap to the NBA," Garcia said.
"I am very thankful for the opportunity and I hope to be able to pay back at least half of the confidence Bert has shown in me. I am also thrilled to be on Classic Hits 1700 AM. As I learned first-hand this past weekend, on a clear night, the signal can reach Austin. This, coupled with the online streaming and the iHeartRadio app, will really allow us to expand our brand," Goldberg said.
