Vipers' losing streak hits double-digits

Hidalgo, TX - Saturday seemed like it would be the Vipers night. Nearly 5,000 fans came through the gates at Dodge Arena and the Vipers held D-League All-Star Billy Thomas to zero first-half points. But a second half surge from Thomas of 28 points led the charge as the Colorado 14ers snuck by the Rio Grande Valley Vipers 125-121 in overtime. The Vipers loss was their 10th straight overall, sixth straight at Dodge Arena, and 13th straight within the Southwest Division.

The Vipers led for most of the game after Quannas White gave Rio Grande Valley their first lead of 14-11on a three-point basket at the 5:17 mark. The Vipers ran proceeded on a 13-2 run capped off by a Kris Collins runner in the lane as the Vipers led by as many as 11 in the first frame.

In the fourth quarter, the Vipers charged out a double-digit lead again as they led 97-87 with 8:50 remaining in regulation. However a 21-6 run by the 14ers, including eight points by Thomas, gave Colorado their first lead since the first quarter. The game was tied at 109 with less than 10 seconds to play with the ball in RGV's hands, but Desmon Farmer dribbled the ball off his knee out of bounds to turn the ball over. Colorado couldn't get a shot to fall at the buzzer as the game went into overtime. Colorado outscored Rio Grande Valley 16-12 in the overtime to notch its 16th victory of the season.

Farmer led the way for Rio Grande Valley with 34 points. Trent Strickland chipped in with 26 points and six rebounds. Collins came off the bench to tally 22 with five assists for the Vipers.

The 14ers had seven players tally double figures. Elton Brown snatched down 16 boards to along with his 21-point night to notch his D-League leading 20th double-double of the season.

The Vipers home stand continues on Thursday night at the Vipers face the Iowa Energy for a 7:00 pm Valentines Day tip-off.
