Vipers Fall Behind Early Again
May 22, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Calgary Vipers News Release
For the third straight game the Calgary Vipers surrendered three runs in the first inning and for the second straight night lost to the Yuma Scorpions by a score of 9-7 at Desert Sun Stadium in Yuma, Arizona. After falling behind 5-1 the Vipers rallied for five in the sixth to take the lead only to have Yuma respond with two in the bottom of the frame to retake the lead at 7-6. Calgary would tie the game in the seventh only to see the Scorpions go out in front for good in the bottom of the inning with two runs to cap the scoring. Once again Yuma's top of the order was lethal as the top five combined for nine of their ten hits along with all nine runs and eight runs batted in.
Berek Fasking (1-1) took the loss for Calgary two nights after recording the Vipers opening night victory. Zach Cline (1-0) took the victory for Yuma. Daniel Buller tossed a scoreless inning for the Snakes out of the bullpen.
Calgary's hitters were walked a staggering 12 times in the game but also left 12 men on base compared to only three for Yuma.
The Vipers go for a spilt of the four game series on Saturday May 22nd at 8:00 PM MDT with Jay Broughton (0-0) expected to start. The team will wrap up the seven game road trip in Tucson, Arizona against the Toros on Sunday May 23rd, Monday May 24th, and Tuesday May 25th all at 8:00 PM MDT.
Opening Day at Foothills Stadium is scheduled for Thursday May 27th at 7:00 PM MDT with the Strong Warriors of Maui, Hawaii making their first ever appearance in Calgary. Maui is one of two new teams in the G.B.L. with Tijuana, Mexico being the other. The league now stretches over three countries and three different time zones and this season a new rule change has been implemented that will eliminate the designated hitter and allow pitchers to bat for themselves.
Tickets are currently on sale at the Vipers' office (2255 Crowchild Trail NW), you can also call 403-277-2255 or visit the Calgary Vipers' website: www.calgaryvipers.com.
