Tucson Toros News Release

Tucson, AZ - Tucson starting pitcher Matt Lincoln threw six scoreless innings as the Tucson Toros shutout the Edmonton Capitals 2-0 Friday night to win their third consecutive game to begin the season.

Lincoln was masterful, striking out 8 hitters allowing just 2 walks and two hits while striking out the side in both the second and sixth innings. Matt was locked in a pitcher's duel with Capitals starter Lou Pote, with both pitchers turning in scoreless outings and handing a 0-0 game over to the bullpens.

The Toros pen continued their stellar work with Lonnie Patterson, Toby Nordman and Emiliano Fruto combining for 8 more strikeouts in 3 innings of work to boost Tucson's punchout total to 16.

While the pitchers were shutting down the opposition's offense, Tucson's hitters scratched together a pair of runs in the 8th inning that ended up as the only tallies in the contest, thanks in part to a pair of Edmonton errors, a passed ball and a wild pitch. With two outs, Second Baseman Jose Valdez reached first base on a dropped third strike passed ball to extend the inning. He advanced to second base on a wild pitch and scored on a line drive base hit by Lino Garcia to put the home club on top, with Lino taking second on an error. Garcia would score on yet another Capital miscue giving Tucson an additional insurance run.

Nordman earned the victory in relief to improve to 1-0 on the young season. Fruto locked down his first save of the year after leading the GBL with 21 for Yuma in 2009.

The Toros will go for their first sweep of the season when they take on the Capitals for the final game of the four game series on Saturday, with a 7:00 p.m. first pitch. The game can be heard live on COOL 1450 AM or video streaming over the internet at www.tucsontoros.com.
