Victoria Seals News Release

Victoria, BC - Kicking off their second season at Royal Athletic Park on Friday night, the Victoria Seals squared off against the expansion Na Koa Ikaika Maui on opening night. With a near-capacity crowd filing in, the Seals turned to former Blue Jay Jason Kershner (0-0) for the start, while Maui countered with Gregorio Martinez (0-0) on the hill.

Jumping out to an early lead in the bottom of the second, Josh Arhart picked up a sacrifice fly to drive home Terrence McClain to put the home side up 1-0. Answering right back in the top of the third, Na Koa Ikaika used an RBI single courtesy of Michael Higa to cash their first run in franchise history and knot the game at one apiece.

Bouncing back to restore their lead in the bottom half of the third inning, a two out single from Sean Smith set up an RBI triple from Wilver Perez, who then brought the crowd to their feet by scoring on the overthrow to third.

Padding their lead in the fourth, McClain picked up the first "poke to Pembroke" of the season, launching a Martinez offering over the left field fence for a 4-1 Victoria lead. After Maui pulled within two in the top of the sixth, McClain capped off a three-run, two RBI night with his second home run to left for a 5-2 Seals advantage.

With Aaron Easton serving as middle reliever, Na Koa Ikaika staged their last stand in the top of the ninth inning. With a pair of runners on and his team down by three, Fehlandt Lentini lifted a ball to deep centrefield only to be robbed at the wall by a leaping Chris Van Rossum, sealing a 5-2 Victoria win.

Kershner gets credit for his first win of the season through seven innings of work, while Brandon Villafuerte picks up the save and Martinez falls to 0-1 on the season with the loss for Na Koa Ikaika.

Game two of the five-game holiday weekend series against Maui goes tomorrow night, a 7:05 p.m. start time at Royal Athletic Park. The contest will also be broadcast live online at www.victoriaseals.ca. Both single game and season tickets for the 2010 campaign are now on sale, available through the Victoria Seals office.
